Power surges in the electrical network can cause damage to household appliances, from refrigerators and televisions to computers and boilers. If you encounter such a situation, you can try to obtain official compensation for the damage. Energy companies explain in which cases this is possible and how to submit a claim correctly.

According to information from DTEK, consumers have the right to claim compensation if they can prove that the equipment failed due to poor-quality electricity — voltage surges, emergency shutdowns or other network parameter violations.

How to apply for compensation?

To start the procedure, you must send a written request through the personal account of your electricity supplier. In the application, it is important to describe the circumstances of the incident in detail: indicate the date and time, place, and a list of the appliances that were damaged. Separately, you should justify why you believe that voltage surges were the cause of the damage and describe the consequences — what exactly broke down and how it manifests itself.

Supporting documents must be attached to the application. The key document is the conclusion of the service centre, which directly states that the cause of the damage was unstable or poor-quality electricity supply. You will also need a free-form application, a copy of your passport and your identification code. Documents can be attached in the form of scans or high-quality photographs.

How long does it take to review an application?

After submitting the application, the electricity supplier reviews it within the established time frame — up to 30 calendar days. Based on the results of the review, a decision is made on the possibility of compensation and its amount, or on refusal with an explanation of the reasons.

Experts advise not to delay the application, to keep the damaged equipment until it is inspected by specialists, and to record the fact of the voltage surge, if possible. This increases the chances of a positive decision and compensation for the losses incurred.
