Rules to Visit Ukraine in 2025: Entry Requirements, Border Crossing and Safety Tips
Planning to travel to Ukraine in 2025? The rules to visit Ukraine under martial law remain relevant and allow safe land entry. Foreign citizens, stateless persons and residents of Ukraine can legally cross the border of Ukraine:
● If they have a valid passport (it must be valid for the entire duration of their stay in Ukraine; citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter with a national identity card);
● If they have a health insurance policy (for journalists, reporters, correspondents, opinion leaders, and media representatives, this is enshrined in the Law of Ukraine on Insurance (Article 7));
● Having an entry visa (unless the country has a visa-free regime);
● Having proof of the purpose of stay (tourism, business, volunteering, etc.);
● If there is evidence of sufficient financial support for the period of stay and for return or transit to a third country (or if it is possible to obtain sufficient financial support legally in Ukraine);
● If they are not banned from entering Ukraine, in accordance with the decision of the authorized state body of Ukraine.
Please note! A residence permit in Ukraine gives the right to enter even if it expired after February 24, 2022 – the document remains valid for the period of martial law in Ukraine and for 30 days after its termination (these rules do not apply to citizens of the russian federation).
The rules for entering Ukraine by a car with foreign registration can be found here.
Visa and entry requirements in 2025
Ukraine travel rules in 2025 allow visa-free entry for 90 days within a 180-day period for citizens of many countries, including EU member states, the UK, Canada, the US, and other countries. Other travelers need a Ukrainian visa, which can be obtained through a consulate or e-visa system. Check if you are eligible for visa-free entry before you travel – you can do this on the Visit Ukraine website by selecting the appropriate nationality in the search.
Ukraine has open and secure border crossings with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova. The checkpoints with russia, Belarus and Transnistria are closed. Check out the detailed list of checkpoints on the borders with the EU, their working hours and queue and don't forget to check the information on items prohibited for transportation across the Ukrainian border.
Health insurance recommendations for Ukraine
Visit Ukraine also strongly recommends that you take out medical insurance with war risk coverage for the entire duration of your stay in Ukraine. This policy guarantees monetary compensation in case of an accident due to passive war risks, terrorist acts and repatriation of the insured person (or his/her body in case of death) from the place of stay to the place of his/her permanent residence.
Options such as emergency care, outpatient treatment, hospitalization, etc. are also covered by this type of health insurance. You can learn how to choose a policy for your trip to Ukraine and apply for insurance online here.
Is there any tourism in Ukraine now?
Absolutely. Although tourism in Ukraine is facing unprecedented challenges, and the war has caused significant damage to infrastructure and unique natural sites that were completely destroyed during the fighting or are currently under occupation, foreign tourists continue to visit Ukraine and Ukrainians continue to travel within the country.
