The introduction of a single emergency number 112 in Ukraine is a requirement of the European Union. In particular, it is to ensure that EU citizens can use the number they are familiar with while in Ukraine.

Initially, the unified emergency number was launched in Kyiv, and as of March 2024, its coverage area has expanded to five more regions. As noted on the government portal, by May 1 of this year, the 112 number will cover the entire western macro-region, and by the end of 2024, the single emergency number will be available throughout Ukraine.

In which regions of Ukraine can emergency services be called by calling 112?

Currently, you can call the emergency services using the single 112 number in:

– Kyiv and Kyiv region

– Lviv region

– Vinnytsia region

– Zhytomyr region

– Cherkasy region

– Chernihiv region

According to Leonid Tymchenko, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, during the United News telethon, the operators currently speak English and Polish in addition to Ukrainian, and in the future, they are expected to recruit specialists with knowledge of Romanian and Hungarian.

It is worth noting that the numbers 101, 102, 103, and 104, which are familiar to Ukrainians, are operating normally and will continue to do so.

What are the benefits of introducing a single 112 number?

First of all, the introduction of a single number allows for a better level of emergency assistance in any critical situations that threaten the lives and health of citizens, because

– to call all the necessary services, it is enough to dial only one number and report the incident or circumstances, the service operator will independently forward the received request to the relevant units, and the person in danger will not have to call several different numbers;

– citizens with hearing or speech impairments can get help by calling 112, as the service employs sign language operators who communicate via video.

How can a person with disabilities call 112?

To report an incident to the rescue service via video, you need to send a text message to 112. In response, the center's operators will send the applicant a link to a video call. The person will only have to click on this link to connect to the operator via video.
