European low-cost airlines are preparing to quickly resume flights to Ukraine after the signing of a peace agreement and the opening of airspace, reports the Financial Times.

Wizz Air, Ryanair, and easyJet predict a sharp increase in air traffic due to the return of Ukrainians and the large-scale reconstruction of the country.

Airline plans

Wizz Air plans to deploy 15 aircraft in Ukraine within two years after the conclusion of peace, and to increase its fleet to 50 aircraft in seven years.

“As soon as the airspace opens, we will resume operations very quickly,” said CEO József Váradi.

Before the full-scale war, Wizz Air was the largest foreign airline in Ukraine, operating more than 5,000 flights in 2021.

Ryanair is also actively preparing for its return. The company says it will be able to resume ticket sales just two weeks after Ukrainian skies open. Ryanair plans to bring passenger traffic in Ukraine to 4 million per year, whereas before the invasion it carried about 1.5 million passengers between Kyiv, Lviv, and Odesa.

“It is easy to open routes from any of our bases in Europe. There will be no difficulty in filling 4 million seats,” said CEO Eddie Wilson.

easyJet, which previously did not fly to Ukraine, is also exploring the possibility of launching flights. CEO Kenton Jarvis calls Ukraine “Europe's biggest construction project” and expects high demand among those returning home. At the same time, easyJet does not yet plan to base aircraft in Ukraine.

As expected, before the pandemic and full-scale invasion, Ukrainian aviation showed steady growth:

in 2019, almost 15 million passengers visited the country,

in 2021 — 10.8 million passengers.

After the skies open, significant demand is expected due to:

the return of millions of Ukrainians,

the reconstruction of infrastructure,

and increased interest from foreign tourists in post-war Ukraine.

At the same time, the resumption of flights will depend on security guarantees and the condition of damaged airports.
