Rental fraud abroad is becoming increasingly common. Learn how to spot scammers, verify landlords, and protect your money when renting apartments abroad in 2025
The number of cases of fraud involving rental accommodation abroad is growing significantly. Fraudsters create fake ads, pretend to be apartment owners, and demand prepayment or a “deposit” before showing the property. This scheme can result in financial losses and ruin your vacation. Here's how to protect yourself and avoid scammers' traps.
Key signs of fraudulent ads
1. Too good a price
One of the first signs of fraud is a price that is too low. If an apartment in the city center is significantly cheaper than the average market price, this is a reason to be wary. Scammers often lure tourists with “tempting” offers that seem too good to be true.
2. No opportunity to view the property
Another common sign is a refusal to show the apartment in person. The landlord comes up with various excuses: “I'm abroad right now,” “the apartment is temporarily occupied,” or “I can only show it after prepayment.” Use your common sense: if the owner avoids showing you the apartment, it's a big risk.
3. Prepayment through unsafe channels
Scammers often ask you to send money via bank transfer, Western Union, or cryptocurrency, avoiding any transaction protection. Never send prepayment if you have not seen the property in person and signed an official contract. This is the easiest way to lose your money.
4. Suspicious photos
Checking images through Google Images or TinEye helps determine if they have been stolen from other sites. If the photos look too professional or are repeated on different resources, this is a red flag. Original ads usually contain photos of the owner and real views of the apartment.
5. No official contract
In most European countries, renting a place has to be done in writing. Having a contract protects your rights and keeps you safe from scams. If the owner won't sign a contract or only offers a verbal agreement, it's better to skip the rental.

Verified platforms and agencies for safe rentals
To reduce the risk of fraud, it is worth using verified platforms that guarantee secure transactions:
● Booking — a popular service with booking guarantees and reviews from real guests.
● Airbnb — provides payment protection and landlord verification.
● Immoweb, SReality, Idealista — national portals for renting apartments in Europe, where verified agencies often operate.
It is also worth contacting agencies with official registration and a license to rent housing.
Additional tips for safe renting
1. Compare prices on several websites to determine the average rental cost.
2. Read reviews from previous tenants, especially those describing communication with the owner.
3. Avoid suspicious ads on social media without checking them on official platforms.
4. If you are offered to “book now, pay later,” clarify what money-back guarantees are in place.
Safe renting is not only about comfort, but also about your money and peace of mind while traveling. By following simple rules for checking the owner, payment methods, and contract terms, you can avoid fraud and enjoy your vacation without unpleasant surprises.
We remind you! Europe is not always safe: some countries have high levels of crime and terrorist threats. Read about which 5 European countries are considered the most dangerous in 2025.
