In September, Ukraine took another step towards transport integration with the European Union. The newly built section of the Chop–Uzhhorod European gauge railway was opened for the first time, allowing direct trains to run from Uzhhorod to Bratislava, Budapest, and Vienna. The next major project will be the construction of a European gauge railway line to Lviv. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery, Minister of Community and Territorial Development Oleksiy Kuleba.

What has already changed: the first new European gauge railway line in Ukraine

The Chop–Uzhhorod section is the first example of a completely new European gauge railway in Ukraine. Thanks to this, it will now be possible to travel directly from Uzhhorod to several European capitals without changing trains. For passengers, this means saving time when crossing the border and avoiding the mandatory transfer from Ukrainian to European gauge.

The launch of direct flights opens up new opportunities for thousands of Ukrainians: from short weekend trips to studying abroad and developing business contacts. This is an important step not only for Zakarpattia, but also for the entire transport system of the country.

Lviv as a future transport hub

The next stage is the construction of a European gauge railway from the Polish border to Lviv. According to Kuleba, the implementation of this project will transform Lviv into a powerful transport hub at the intersection of Ukraine and the European Union. This will enable not only passenger but also freight transport.

The government already has preliminary agreements with international partners on financing and launching the work. For Lviv, such infrastructure will mean new economic opportunities — from the development of tourism to attracting investment in logistics centers.

At the same time, the development of Eurotrack means a greater flow of foreign tourists to Ukraine. It is important for them to have medical insurance that covers military risks. This issue is particularly relevant in 2025, and Visit Ukraine offers a ready-made solution: a policy that takes into account current realities and allows you to feel protected even in unstable conditions.

Eurogauges in Ukraine's transport development strategy

In addition to Lviv, the government plans to expand Eurogauges in several other directions. The projects include new sections in Zakarpattia and Volyn, which will open routes to the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland. This concerns not only passenger but also freight traffic.

The development of such transport corridors will allow Ukrainian industrial centers to directly access European ports and markets. In total, the government plans to develop ten key directions, which are to become part of Ukraine's long-term transport strategy.

We remind you! When traveling in Europe, Ukrainians should take into account not only visa rules but also financial requirements: in many countries, you need to confirm that you have a certain amount of money for each day of your stay. These norms vary — from a symbolic few euros to tens or even hundreds per day. Read about the minimum amounts required by different countries in our previous article.

Frequantly
asked questions
What is Euro gauge and how does it differ from Ukrainian gauge?
Euro gauge is a standard railway track with a width of 1435 mm, which is used in most European countries. In Ukraine, the prevailing width is 1520 mm. Due to this difference, trains cannot run without changing or rearranging wheel sets, so the construction of Euro gauge allows direct flights to be launched without delays at the border.
