New control format on international trains: Ukrainians can expect faster border crossings
Ukrainian international railway routes are moving to a new level of comfort. Long stops at the border are gradually becoming a thing of the past, and travel is becoming much faster and more predictable. Passengers will be able to complete all necessary procedures directly in the carriage, without additional queues and waiting. Find out more about how the updated control format will work and when it will be introduced
Ukraine is transitioning to a more modern model of border procedures on international railway routes. The goal is to reduce travel time and eliminate lengthy stops at the border, which have been one of the main causes of delays for years. In the near future, passengers will experience a significant acceleration in travel abroad. Details are provided below.
How will the control procedure on international trains change?
Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has announced that the government plans to introduce a new approach to border crossing and move document checks and customs control directly to the carriages while the train is in motion. This means that all formalities will be completed before crossing the state border, without the traditional long stop at the checkpoint. This system allows for route optimisation and reduced travel time without compromising security or the quality of checks.
Which routes will be the first to see these innovations?
The initial implementation will affect the most popular international trains. It is on these routes that passengers spend hours every day going through formal procedures, so the effect of the update will be most noticeable. After testing the new format, it is planned to gradually expand it to other flights, including routes with night carriages.

Why is the new system important for travellers?
The change in control logic offers several advantages at once:
– less time on the road;
– predictable train schedules;
– comfortable completion of all procedures in a seating or sleeping car;
– reduced queues and congestion at border crossing points.
As a result, international rail travel will become faster, more stable and more convenient for all categories of passengers.
When will the new border crossing system come into effect?
The first flights with the updated control format are planned to be launched at the beginning of the new year. After that, the technology will be gradually scaled up to become the standard for as many trains as possible running between Ukraine and EU countries.
