The technical condition of a vehicle directly affects road safety. In order to detect malfunctions and prevent dangerous vehicles from being driven, Ukraine has a mandatory technical inspection (OTK) procedure in place. It allows vehicles to be kept in good working order and reduces the number of accidents caused by technical reasons.

Mandatory vehicle inspection: what you need to know

Mandatory technical inspection is a check of the condition of vehicles participating in road traffic. Its main purpose is to ensure that the vehicle complies with established safety standards and environmental requirements.

It is important to remember that MIA service centres do not carry out technical inspections. They only maintain a register of companies that are authorised to perform mandatory technical inspections.

What parameters are checked

During the procedure, specialists check:

▪️ the operation of the braking system and steering;

▪️ the condition of headlights and lighting devices;

▪️ wear on tyres, wheels and glass;

▪️ the light transmission level of the glass;

▪️ the serviceability of gas cylinder equipment (if any);

▪️ the level of toxicity or smoke in the exhaust gases.

In addition, the overall technical condition of the car is assessed — from the integrity of the body to the fastening of number plates, the serviceability of the audible signal and other elements that affect traffic safety.

Who is required to undergo technical inspection

The following vehicles are required to undergo mandatory technical inspection:

▪️ trucks;

▪️ buses;

▪️ passenger cars and taxis used for commercial transport;

▪️ vehicles transporting dangerous goods;

▪️ trailers and semi-trailers.

Owners of passenger cars that are not used for profit, as well as motorcycles, mopeds and motorised tricycles, are not required to undergo technical inspection.

How often do you need to undergo inspection

The frequency depends on the category of transport:

▪️ passenger cars and trucks up to 3.5 tonnes used for commercial purposes — once every two years;

▪️ taxis and large trucks — annually;

▪️ vehicles transporting dangerous goods — twice a year.

You can check the validity of the technical inspection report online via the official website of the Main Service Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the section ‘Document verification’ → ‘Verification of the validity of the technical inspection report’.

Who conducts the technical inspection

The inspection is carried out by authorised entities listed in the official register of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. These companies are accredited and operate according to approved standards. The service centres of the Ministry of Internal Affairs monitor their activities but do not carry out the inspections themselves.

After passing the MOT, the owner receives a report indicating the condition of the car and the date of the next inspection. If any faults are found, a non-compliance report is drawn up, and the inspection must be repeated after the problems have been rectified.

The inspection process is recorded with photos and videos, which ensures transparency and prevents fraud.

Changes from 2025

From the beginning of 2025, updated rules for technical inspections will come into force in Ukraine. Among the key changes are:

▪️ a reduced package of documents for the accreditation of technical inspection points;

▪️ improved requirements for photo and video recording;

▪️ the possibility of cancelling inspection reports in the event of violations by inspection points.
