How to apply for a D visa to enter Slovenia?

Step 1 - Determine the purpose of the trip

The visa category that corresponds to your situation is selected: work, study, family reunification, doing business, scientific or volunteer activities.

The purpose affects the list of documents and the chances of approval.

Step 2 – Prepare the necessary documents

The standard list includes: passport, photo, confirmation of the purpose of the trip (letter from the employer or university, confirmation of financial capacity, certificates from medical and government authorities), health insurance, financial documents, etc.

Step 3 – Make an appointment to submit documents

Applications are submitted through:

- The Slovenian embassy or consulate in your country.

- Authorized visa centers (e.g. VFS Global).

You can make an appointment to submit in advance online or by email.

Step 4 – Submit a visa application

On the appointed day, you must come in person and submit a package of documents, as well as pay a consular fee (approximately 77 euros, if the applicant is not a close relative of a citizen of the Republic of Slovenia or another EU member state) and submit biometric data (fingerprints and photo).

Step 5 – Wait for the decision

The processing time is usually 15–30 days, but sometimes it can take longer (up to 60 days), especially in complex cases or when the consulate is busy.

Step 6 – Get your visa

If approved, you will receive a type D visa affixed to your passport. From now on, you can enter Slovenia and apply for a temporary residence permit (if your category allows it).

If you plan to stay in Slovenia for a longer period, after entering, you should apply for a residence permit (dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje) at the administrative authority at your place of residence.
