Road safety is currently one of the top policy priorities in Europe. For a long time, there have been discussions about the feasibility of limiting the speed limit within settlements to 30 km/h. A significant argument in favour of such a decision is the European Commission's statement that reducing the speed limit will significantly improve the safety situation on the roads.

What changes to traffic rules are expected in the EU?

A preliminary reform plan was proposed in March 2023. Of course, it will be amended, but the main points will remain:

- border guards will be able to exchange information on traffic violations;

- all EU countries will have a common database of people who have been deprived of their driving licences;

- limitation of traffic speed to 30 km/h in European cities.

Please note! The practice of speed limits is successfully implemented in Paris, Amsterdam and a number of Spanish cities.

Did the European Commission support the proposed changes?

The issue of road safety has once again come to the fore thanks to Vopke Hustre, who at a meeting of the European Commission presented statistics on road accidents and injuries/fatalities in cities where speed limits have been introduced:

- Bologna - the number of accidents decreased by 11%, the number of injuries - by almost 10%;

- Amsterdam - the number of road accidents and noise pollution decreased;

- Wales - the number of injuries decreased by a quarter in six months.

What are the objections to the reforms?

The main protests were expressed by motorists in Paris and Munich. They believe that such restrictions will significantly reduce the standard of living of car users. In particular, attention is drawn to the possible danger to the outlying areas of megacities, where speed is more difficult to check.
