In 2023, the birth rate in Ukraine decreased by a third from the pre-war level. According to the Ministry of Justice, 187,387 children were born last year. For comparison, in 2021, 273,772 babies were born in Ukraine. The reasons are clear, as Ukraine has been at war for two years. However, a decline in fertility rates is also recorded in other countries, including Poland, which recorded a record low birth rate in 2023 since the end of World War II. At the same time, according to ukrayina.pl, a significant number of babies were born to citizens of other countries, including Ukraine.

How many Ukrainian children were born in Poland in 2023?

According to the Central Statistical Office of Poland, 272 thousand children were born in Poland in 2023, including:

– 257.3 thousand babies are Polish citizens

– 15.4 thousand newborns have foreign parents.

The largest number of babies with foreign citizenship are Ukrainians. Thus, in 2023, 12.8 thousand little Ukrainians were born in Poland (in 2022, Ukrainian women gave birth to 13.7 thousand children).

In addition, last year, little citizens were born in Poland: Belarus - 775, Vietnam - 188, Georgia - 161, India - 160, russia - 141, and Moldova - 111.

At the same time, ukrayina.pl notes that a child born in Poland can obtain Polish citizenship only if one of the parents has a Polish passport.

Demographic crisis in Poland

For comparison, in 2022, 305 thousand babies were born in Poland. Although the overall birth rate in the country has declined significantly, foreign nationals are improving the figures. Thus, in 2023, the largest number of foreign babies was born in Poland in recent years.

For example, in 2015, there were only 1,700 of them, in 2018 - more than 5,100, in 2021 - almost 9,000, and in 2022 - almost 14,600. According to analysts, the increase in recent years is the result of economic migration to Poland, and in 2022 and 2023 it was further "strengthened" by refugees from Ukraine.

However, the figures are called disappointing. The demographic forecast of the Central Statistical Office indicates that Poland's population will drop to 30.4 million in 2060 (as of now, Poland has 37.75 million). And according to alternative scenarios: to 26.7 million (low scenario) and to 34.8 million (high scenario).
