On the evening of August 13 and early morning of August 14, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected four russian bombers flying over international waters. According to a NORAD press release, the aircraft were operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Provocations by the russian federation are recorded on a regular basis, but Canada and the United States consider moscow's "muscle play" to be a regular occurrence and do not consider it a threat to their territories.

In recent years, even before the conflict in Ukraine, incidents between NATO aircraft and russian aircraft have become more frequent. Most of them have occurred over the Baltic Sea, but there have also been incidents over the Black Sea and other waters. During the deployment of the 9th Squadron in Estonia alone, RAF aircraft intercepted more than 50 russian aircraft in 4 months.

Western reaction to russian provocations

Two of the four russian aircraft operating in international airspace were spotted north of the Scottish Islands. The British Ministry of Defense believes that the bombers could have been used for reconnaissance, and therefore two Typhoon jet fighters and a Voyager refueling aircraft were sent to intercept them.

The British planes followed the russian Tu-142s. 

It should be noted that Tu-142s are aircraft used for reconnaissance, maritime patrols, and anti-submarine warfare.

In addition, the Danish Air Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force report that the other two russian planes were flying toward an area controlled by the Netherlands for the NATO military alliance over the North Sea. As a result, Dutch F-16 fighters were also scrambled, but the Russian planes were intercepted before they entered NATO airspace, and the Tu-142s were turned back.

According to a representative of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, russian planes often fly close to the airspace of European countries, and sometimes violate it. It is also important that russian bombers do not have a unique identification code, do not provide a flight plan, and do not conduct bilateral conversations, which is why all aircraft are subject to mandatory interception, as they may pose a threat to civilian aircraft.

Why is moscow provoking near NATO countries?

According to russia, the russian air force was conducting "scheduled flights" over international waters. According to the russian Ministry of Defense, strategic bombers and fighters were deployed over the Chukchi, Baltic, Barents, Norwegian and Beaufort Seas. russia did not comment on the fact that their "scheduled flights" caused air alert in the West.

At the same time, the russian Air Force reported the incident, telling a completely different story, in particular, about the interception of a Norwegian Boeing P-8A Poseidon (reconnaissance type) near its borders over the Barents Sea, but the Norwegian plane allegedly turned back immediately after the russian fighter jet appeared.
