If Ukrainians plan to leave Poland for a period longer than 30 days, or to leave the country permanently and return home, it is necessary to cancel their PESEL UKR status to avoid losses.

Where can I apply for cancellation of temporary protection in Poland?

In cases where a person plans his/her departure in advance, he/she should apply to the commune office. On the spot, they will receive an official form to fill in. 

If Ukrainians are unable to submit the application on their own (for example, because they are already outside Poland), they can do so with the help of an official representative. Thus, Ukrainian citizens will waive all rights granted by temporary protection. 

What does temporary protection in Poland entail?

Let us remind you that the PESEL UKR status allows you to:

• Legally stay in Poland (at least) until 4 March 2024;
• be officially employed;
• receive benefits: 500 PLN for children, and an additional 300 PLN for schoolchildren;
• receive co-financing for nurseries, kindergartens and preschool clubs;
• use the services of healthcare facilities and emergency care financed by the National Health Fund of Ukraine.

Is it possible not to refuse temporary protection in Poland?

When leaving Poland for Ukraine for more than 30 calendar days, Ukrainians automatically lose their PESEL UKR status. However, submitting an application is also a mandatory procedure in cases when a person is travelling to countries that are members of the Schengen area. Submitting an application allows the Polish authorities to officially register your departure.

Please note that all the funds paid by Poland to Ukrainian refugees who left the country but did not apply for renunciation of the PESEL UKR status will have to be returned! Because social benefits are available to Ukrainian citizens only when they and their children stay in Poland
