Air travel begins at the stage of packing your suitcase. Incorrect packing of hand luggage is often the cause of delays at security, confiscated items, or even a ruined mood before departure.

Transportation rules are strictly regulated by international safety regulations and internal airline requirements. Although the details may vary depending on the carrier, there is a list of items that consistently cause problems during airport security checks. This is reminded by Express, citing recommendations from experts at Fulton Umbrellas.

Why are carry-on baggage rules so strict?

Carry-on baggage is stored directly in the aircraft cabin, so any potentially dangerous items can pose a risk to passengers and crew. That is why airport security services pay special attention to it — checks can be thorough, and decisions to confiscate items are made instantly.

It is also important to remember that rules may vary not only between airlines, but also between the countries you are traveling through.

Electronic devices with lithium-ion batteries

One of the most problematic categories is electronics with rechargeable batteries. Experts advise against carrying high-power lithium-ion battery devices in your carry-on luggage. Airlines usually only allow the following to be carried in the cabin:

● electronic devices with batteries up to 100–160 Wh;

● standard smartphones, laptops, tablets, and power banks within the permitted limits.

To avoid delays:

● fully charge your gadgets before departure;

● turn them off before passing through security — this simplifies the inspection and reduces suspicion from security personnel.

Liquids and food: a hidden risk area

Even experienced travelers often forget that some foods are considered liquids. These include jams, pastes, sauces, soft and cream cheeses. They all fall under the general rule: no more than 100 ml per container. If the volume is exceeded, the product may be confiscated without compensation.

In addition, some countries have restrictions on the import of certain food products. Therefore, before packing, it is worth checking the rules of the destination country in advance.

Umbrellas: not as safe as they seem

Umbrellas are usually not prohibited, but large or bulky models may raise questions during inspection. They are often considered potentially dangerous items. Experts advise:

● check large umbrellas in your luggage;

● take only compact folding models into the cabin or do without them altogether.

This will free up space for essential items.

Protein powders and loose substances

Protein mixes, powders, and other loose products are not formally prohibited in carry-on luggage. However, they are often the cause of delays. The reason is simple: such substances can obscure images on X-ray scanners, forcing security to conduct additional checks. This means:

● longer waiting times;

● manual inspection;

● sometimes — confiscation of the product.

If the powder is not critically necessary in the cabin, it is better to put it in your checked baggage.

Why you should check the rules before each flight

Even if you fly frequently, there are no universal rules. Airlines may change their requirements, and countries may introduce additional restrictions. Experts advise before each trip:

● check the rules of the specific airline;

● take into account the requirements of transfer airports;

● familiarize yourself with the customs restrictions of the country of arrival.

This is a simple step that will help you avoid stress and loss of belongings.

Keep in mind: when preparing for air travel, it is important to think not only about your luggage, but also about your own safety. In many countries, medical insurance is a mandatory condition for entry, and in case of illness or injury, it protects you from significant financial expenses. Ukrainians can purchase medical insurance for travel abroad online on the Visit Ukraine platform — it's fast, convenient, and allows you to travel with confidence that you are protected in any unforeseen situation.
