How Ukrainians' interest in history has changed: results of a new survey
Ukrainians are becoming increasingly interested in their own history and issues of national memory. Find out which topics attract the most attention and how the dynamics of interest are changing
The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has published the results of a new representative survey conducted by the Operational Sociology Association. The study showed that Ukrainians' interest in their own history continues to grow and reached its highest level in three years in 2025.
Half of those surveyed — 49% — gave the highest rating (10 out of 10) when assessing their interest in Ukrainian history. The UINP notes that this is a stable and consistent trend, demonstrating a strengthening of national self-identification in the context of russian aggression.
What historical topics interest Ukrainians the most
The study identified several areas that Ukrainians study most often:
● the history of the Cossacks and the Hetmanate — 43.7%;
● the history of Rus — 35.9%;
● the history of independent Ukraine — 26.9%.
These topics form the basis of contemporary historical discourse, and their popularity indicates society's interest in the origins of Ukrainian statehood and the struggle for independence in different eras.

Where Ukrainians get their information about history
The availability of digital content has significantly influenced the ways in which historical knowledge is consumed. The most popular sources are:
● YouTube — 47.9%;
● documentaries — 38.1%;
● television programs about history — 26.9%.
Video content remains the most convenient format for presenting complex topics, especially for younger audiences. The study notes that young people are more active users of online platforms, but less involved in offline practices of commemoration.
Commemorative practices: who honors the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred
A special section of the survey was devoted to Ukrainians' participation in commemorating the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. According to the study:
● 59.6% of Ukrainians participate in annual commemorative events;
● the highest level of participation is in the western regions (73.1%);
● the lowest is in Kyiv (49.5%).
Researchers emphasize that although the overall level of participation is high, young people participate much less frequently. This may indicate a need for new forms of communication that better resonate with a generation that has grown up in the digital age.
