3,000 km across Ukraine by train: how to get free tickets

Ukrzaliznytsia's free travel programme was one of the most notable initiatives in December — it allows passengers to receive 3,000 km and travel around the country without paying for tickets during certain periods. Find out who can take advantage of the 3,000 km and how to get free tickets in the app

Ukraine has launched a passenger support programme that allows passengers to receive 3,000 km of free travel on Ukrzaliznytsia trains. This initiative is currently in a trial phase and has already become one of the most talked about topics, especially among those who regularly travel between frontline regions and large cities. Let's take a look at who is eligible for the programme, how to use it, and which routes are already available.

What is this programme and how does it work?

Since 3 December, the official Ukrzaliznytsia app has offered the option to receive a 3,000 km package, which can be used for four free trips during off-peak periods. This means that passengers can travel without paying for tickets on certain routes while the programme is in its trial period.

The programme covers trains running to all frontline regions. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, this initiative should facilitate the movement of those who live, work or are forced to regularly travel to high-risk areas.

How to activate 3,000 km of free travel

To take advantage of the programme, all you need is an updated phone and a few minutes of your time. The algorithm is simple and the same for all users.

1. Update the Ukrzaliznytsia app.

After the update, the system will ask you to authorise and complete all the necessary checks.

2. Verify your identity via Diya.Sign.

This is a mandatory step that confirms the passenger's identity and prevents abuse of the programme.

3. Press the ‘3000’ button.

A special section will appear in the bottom panel. Then select “Participate”.

4. Select a train marked ‘3000’.

Such flights are marked with a special icon in the app. It is on these flights that you can use your free kilometres.

After purchasing a ticket, the system will automatically deduct the mileage from the available package.

Which destinations are available

At the time of the programme's launch, it is already possible to purchase free trips on dozens of routes within Ukraine. Among them are:

Mykolaiv — Barvinkove

Lviv — Zaporizhzhia

Sumy — Kyiv

Kharkiv — Uzhhorod

Odesa — Zaporizhzhia

Dnipro — Ivano-Frankivsk

Kyiv — Konotop

The list is not final — Ukrzaliznytsia continues to expand the number of trains participating in the programme.

A pleasant bonus: the programme applies to children's compartments, as well as to selected Intercity+ (2nd class) trains.

When can you start using it

The first trips became available on 5 December. This means that passengers can plan their travel and test the new system right now.

Please note that the programme is only valid during off-peak periods — in the evening, early in the morning or during hours of low passenger traffic. This allows for a more even distribution of the load on trains and testing of the programme without overloads.

Reminder! The winter support programme is once again helping Ukrainians cope with seasonal expenses: the state credits 1,000 hryvnia to a special account, and these funds can only be spent in certain categories. In 2025–2026, the rules became stricter, so it is important to understand which purchases are actually allowed. Find out what exactly you can spend your winter thousand on.
