Day of Radio Technical Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine: the significance of the holiday of the guardians of the Ukrainian sky
The Day of Radio Technical Troops of the Air Force of Ukraine is an annual honoring of those who provide Ukraine with “eyes in the sky” and are the first to see any air threat. Learn more about the history of the holiday, its importance and the contribution of these units to the safety of every Ukrainian
Every year, on November 30, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Servicemen and Radio Technical Troops of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is not just a professional holiday, but a reminder of those who stand on the invisible front every day, protecting the Ukrainian sky. It is thanks to their work that the country receives warnings about missile attacks, enemy drones and other aerial threats. At a time when airspace security has become a matter of life and death for millions, the contribution of military radio units has become especially important. This is a day of gratitude, respect and recognition of their work that saves lives every second.
What is this holiday and why is it important for Ukraine today?
The Day of Radio Technical Troops is a date that reminds us of a key component of the defense of the Ukrainian sky. At a time when air strikes have become one of the main threats to cities and communities, the work of radio engineering units determines the speed of response and effectiveness of air defense.
Radio engineering troops are a key link in detecting any air threats. It is their units that carry out radio reconnaissance, track aircraft, missiles, helicopters and drones, and transmit important data to other defense forces.
After the outbreak of a full-scale war, the role of RTVs became critically important. Their work has helped destroy hundreds of enemy aircraft and thousands of missiles and drones, and most importantly, saved many lives. According to the Air Force, since 2022, radar units have detected more than a million air targets, a figure that demonstrates the scale of their daily work.
It is the radar troops who ensure continuous control of the airspace, having no right to rest or shelter during attacks. While others are hiding from danger, they remain in position to instantly detect the enemy and transmit information to those who will shoot down targets.
Today, many military RTVs are fighting side by side with their colleagues in mobile fire groups, destroying drones and missiles in various directions.
Ukraine thanks each of them for their endurance, professionalism and courage. Eternal honor to those who gave their lives protecting our sky.

History of the Day of Radio Engineering Troops and development of the industry
Despite the fact that today radio engineering troops are primarily associated with modern radars and air defense systems, their history began long before the current technologies. The formation of these units was a key milestone in the development of Ukraine's air security and an important part of the formation of the Armed Forces.
The first radio engineering units appeared in the middle of the twentieth century, when the world realized the need for early detection of air threats. After Ukraine regained its independence in 1991, these troops became the basis for the creation of its own national airspace control system.
The holiday was established on September 16, 2010, by order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mykhailo Yezhel, given the importance of radio engineering troops and in order to maintain the prestige of military service in military units and subunits of this type of troops.
Since 2014, after the beginning of Russian aggression, the radio technical military have been assigned new tasks: modernization of equipment, transition to modern digital technologies, and strengthening of capabilities to detect enemy targets.
After 2022, their role has become crucial: it is the radio engineering units that provide constant monitoring of the air situation, help air defense systems shoot down missiles and drones, and save thousands of lives by providing timely information about the threat.
Honoring the defenders and traditions of this day
The Day of the Radio Technical Troops is not only a historic date but also an opportunity to express gratitude to those who keep the Ukrainian sky safe every day. This holiday unites the military, veterans, their families and all Ukrainians who understand how important the work of these specialists is.
Radio engineering units celebrate this day with their colleagues, remembering fallen heroes and recognizing those who continue to serve. Award ceremonies, meetings with veterans, educational events in military units, and demonstrations of technology and modern equipment are often held.
For civilians, it is an occasion to thank those who ensure air safety: from radar operators on duty to unit commanders. At a time when air alerts have become a part of reality, their invisible but continuous work is of particular value.
Why is it worth remembering and supporting radio engineering troops?
In the modern realities of war, radio engineering troops have become one of the most important elements of defense. Their work is invisible to most people, but its results are tangible every day: in saved lives, timely warnings and successful air defense. Recognizing the importance of these troops is not only important for the military or professionals - it is a matter of national security that concerns every Ukrainian.
Supporting radio engineering units means supporting the Ukrainian sky. It is an understanding that modern technology, trained professionals and modernized equipment are not a luxury, but a vital necessity. It is worth remembering these servicemen not only on holidays, but every day, because they are the first to face the air threat and help Ukraine survive.
