Contract service: Ukrainians will be able to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a specific period
New rules for contract service are being prepared in Ukraine — the Ministry of Defense is developing updated contracts with clearly defined terms of service, additional payments, and expanded social guarantees for military personnel. Find out what changes await military personnel and when the new contract system will start
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, on behalf of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has begun preparing new types of contracts for servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The changes provide for the introduction of clearly defined terms of service — from one to five years — as well as a number of new guarantees and benefits for military personnel.
This was reported by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal on Facebook.
Fixed terms of service from 1 to 5 years: new contracts for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The new contracts will allow servicemen to choose the length of their service: 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years. Those who sign a contract for a term of 2 to 5 years will be granted a one-year deferral from mobilization after the contract expires.
“Contracts will be for 1 to 5 years. For contracts of 2-5 years, there will be a one-year deferral from mobilization upon completion of the contract,” Shmyhal said.
Who will be able to sign new contracts?
After the relevant legislative changes are adopted, all military personnel will be able to sign contracts — both those who already serve in the Armed Forces and those who are only planning to join.

Terms of the new contracts (according to the Ministry of Defense)
Fixed term of service — 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years;
Deferral from mobilization for 1 year after the end of the contract;
The ability to choose a military unit and position (within the list of shortage specialties);
Monthly payments, including additional payments for shortage specialties;
Additional monthly payments for participation in combat operations;
The option to renew the contract for military personnel and university graduates.
The minister stressed that the reform of contract service is a response to a key demand from the military, their families, and society.
“The new contracts are about fairness and predictability,” Shmyhal emphasized.
It is expected that, along with the introduction of fixed terms of service, the government will expand the social package for military personnel and provide bonuses for signing contracts.
The reform is being prepared jointly with the government, the Ministry of Finance, and international partners. Details of the new contract system are expected to be announced in the near future.
