Who needs insurance to enter Kosovo?
An insurance policy is often a mandatory document for those applying for a visa. Term travel insurance is mandatory for all tourists visiting Kosovo, and they must provide proof of their policy when applying for a visa.
Even for those who do not need a visa (for example, citizens of certain countries for short stays), insurance remains important: make sure your insurance policy covers your entire trip, planned activities and emergency expenses, including medical evacuation.
Therefore, insurance for entry into Kosovo is required:
– for visa applicants — a mandatory requirement.
– for travellers without a visa — highly recommended, especially given the quality of local healthcare and potential risks during travel.

General requirements for insurance policies for short-term and long-term trips to Kosovo
– Medical expense coverage. The policy must cover unforeseen medical expenses, including possible hospitalisation, treatment and, if necessary, medical evacuation.
– Coverage outside the country (for long-term/multi-visa travel). For short-term tourist trips, domestic coverage is sufficient. But if you plan to leave Kosovo or extend your stay, it is important that your insurance is valid throughout your entire itinerary.
– Insurer reliability. The policy must be issued by an insurance company with a reliable reputation and, preferably, an official representative office.
– Validity period. The policy must cover the entire period of stay — from the date of entry to the date of departure.
What kind of insurance can you get in Kosovo?
Local insurance products may be available within the country itself, but they have significant drawbacks:
– Valid only within Kosovo — does not cover needs abroad or during transit.
– Can be expensive, especially due to a less competitive market.
– May not meet visa or entry requirements if the policy is only issued upon arrival.
If you need an insurance policy that is recognised for visa or entry purposes, local options may not be acceptable.
An alternative to local insurance is to take out a policy before your trip through Ukrainian insurers, in particular on the Visit Ukraine portal. This is a convenient solution for tourists, students and temporary visitors, as the process is completely online, takes only a few minutes, and the finished document is sent by email. Such policies usually have international coverage, include medical assistance, hospitalisation, evacuation and other important options, and allow you to choose the duration of insurance and the geographical coverage.
