Who needs insurance to enter New Zealand?

– Tourists. Insurance is not mandatory for entry, but it is strongly recommended, as medical care can be expensive or difficult to pay for without a policy.

– Students. You must have medical insurance and provide proof of this when applying for a visa. This is especially important for students from countries that do not have a reciprocal medical agreement with New Zealand — the shared healthcare system (ACC) only covers accidents, not illness or hospitalisation.

– Working Holiday Programmes (except for citizens of Ireland, Japan, Malaysia or the United Kingdom). Medical insurance is mandatory for the entire duration of your stay in the country.

– Other temporary visas (travel for work, residence, etc.). Insurance is a condition for maintaining or extending your visa.

General requirements for insurance policies for short-term and long-term travel to New Zealand

– Medical coverage must include treatment of illnesses, hospitalisation, medical evacuation, necessary procedures (especially critical for students) — the policy must have a sufficient coverage limit.

– The policy must cover the entire period of stay. For short tourist trips, coverage for the duration of the visit is sufficient; for long-term trips, coverage for the entire period of study or work is required.

– Evacuation/repatriation: it is advisable to include emergency expenses for return to the country or transportation in case of serious illness or accident.
