Every driver in Ukraine is required to have a compulsory civil liability insurance policy (OSCPV), better known as motor third party liability insurance. But what happens if someone other than the owner is behind the wheel? Is motor third party liability insurance valid if another driver is behind the wheel? Let's take a look at all the details.

Take out a motor third party liability insurance online in 5 minutes and feel confident on the road!

What is motor insurance and why is it mandatory?

Motor insurance is compulsory insurance of the liability of vehicle owners to third parties. It protects the driver from financial losses in the event of an accident, covering damages caused to other road users.

It compensates for damage caused to the life, health or property of victims. Thus, compulsory liability insurance is an important element of road safety and a way to protect yourself from large financial expenses.

Every car owner is required to have a valid motor vehicle insurance policy. In Ukraine, motor third-party liability insurance is mandatory for all registered vehicles.

Today, you can get motor third-party liability insurance online in just a few minutes on the Visit Ukraine portal. Other types of car insurance are also available here, including mini comprehensive insurance and additional policies that will help extend your car's protection.

Does motor third-party liability insurance cover damages if the car owner is not behind the wheel?

Is motor insurance valid if another driver is behind the wheel? Yes, it is valid, but with important conditions. According to the law, the motor insurance policy covers the liability of the driver who is driving the car with the owner's permission. This means that if your relative or friend, whom you have entrusted with your car, was behind the wheel, the other driver's motor insurance will be valid.

This rule applies regardless of whether the driver is listed in any documents. In Ukraine, motor vehicle insurance is issued for a vehicle, not for a specific driver. Therefore, car insurance that is not for the driver is common practice.

When does insurance not work?

There are cases when the motor insurance of the car owner will not cover the damage. For example:

▪️ If the car was stolen and the thief was responsible for the accident.

▪️ If the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

▪️ If the car was driven without a valid driving licence.

▪️ When the policy is issued to a specific person and applies only to them or other privileged categories

In addition, the motor third-party liability insurance policy does not cover the driver's or car owner's own losses. For such cases, take out mini-Hull insurance, which is available on Visit Ukraine and will protect your car.

How to quickly get motor insurance online?
