- Long-term visa (type D)

This visa is issued to foreigners who wish to enter Ukraine for temporary but extended stay or for permanent residence. The type D visa allows foreigners to stay or reside in Ukraine for more than 90 days. - Transit visa

How to apply for a visa to Ukraine from Italy?


Step-by-step process for applying for a Ukrainian visa from Italy


Step 1 – Determine the type of visa you need

Before submitting your documents, it is important to correctly identify the purpose of your trip and the appropriate visa type:

- Type C (short-term visa) – for stays up to 90 days;

- Type D (long-term visa) – for work, study, immigration;

- Transit visa – for crossing Ukraine en route to a third country.


Step 2 – Register and fill out the online Ukraine visa application on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

You must specify your citizenship, the purpose of travel, and the country from which you can apply. At this stage, you will also receive information about the specific Ukrainian embassy, consulate, or visa center in that country where you can submit your application.


Step 3 – Prepare the complete set of documents

Depending on the type of visa, the list of documents may vary. In general, you will need: a valid international passport, a standard-format photo, confirmation of your travel purpose (such as a work contract, university acceptance letter, or invitation from a private or legal entity in Ukraine), medical insurance, proof of sufficient funds, return tickets or travel itinerary.


Step 4 – Submit your visa application

After preparing the documents, you can submit an application in person to the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy, the Consulate of Ukraine in Milan or the Consulate of Ukraine in Naples.


Step 5 – Pay the consular fee

A fee is charged for processing all visa types: €60 for standard processing (10–30 working days) or €120 for expedited processing (up to 5 working days).


Step 6 – Wait for the decision and receive your visa

Where to apply for a Ukrainian visa in Italy?


Persons who require a visa must obtain it at the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy, the Consulate of Ukraine in Milan, or the Consulate of Ukraine in Naples.

1. A valid passport that remains valid for at least three months beyond the end of the trip, has at least two blank pages, and is not older than 10 years.

Separate visa forms must be submitted for children listed in a parent’s passport. Forms for minors must be signed by their parents or legal guardians.


3. A color passport-size photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm).


4. A valid medical insurance for travel to Ukraine or travel insurance Ukraine Italy policy for the requested period of stay, with minimum coverage of €30,000 and valid in Ukraine, preferably insurance with war coverage Ukraine.


5. Proof of financial support during your stay in Ukraine (bank statements, a declaration of financial responsibility from the inviting party or inviting organization/company – either as a separate document or as part of the invitation).


6. The consular fee must be paid after consultation with the responsible consular officer (EC card payment is available on-site).


7. Third-country nationals usually need a residence permit in Italy; otherwise, the visa application must be submitted in their country of origin.


8. Documents confirming the purpose of your trip – an invitation from an employer, university, etc. 


Important! Documents issued by foreign authorities must be legalized and translated into Ukrainian.


The consul is authorized to request additional documents beyond those submitted by the applicant and reserves the right to conduct a personal interview.

After the interview, the application may require further administrative processing.


How long does it take to obtain D visa?


The embassy reviews the visa application and makes a decision to approve or deny the visa within the following timeframes:


- Expedited processing – up to 5 working days from the date of receiving all required documents. A double consular fee applies.


- Standard processing – up to 10 working days from the date of receiving documents. This period may be extended to 30 working days if additional checks are needed.


Is it possible to get an electronic visa (e-visa) to Ukraine from Italy?


Unfortunately, Ukraine currently does not provide an Ukraine e-visa for Italian citizens, so all documents must be submitted in person.


What other documents are required for entry into Ukraine besides a visa?


According to the current Ukraine visa requirements for Italian citizens, you will need:


1. Type D visa

It must be obtained at the embassy or consulate of Ukraine in Italy before the trip. Based on this visa, you will later apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit within Ukraine.
