The S17 expressway will be extended to the border with Ukraine. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has announced the launch of a large-scale project that will ensure comfortable and fast travel from Warsaw to the border crossing in Hrebenne.

What has already been done and what are the plans?

Currently, the S17 route is 182 km long, running from the Warsaw-East junction to Kurowo-West, where it connects with the S12 road, allowing drivers to bypass Lublin and reach Piaski. The next step is the construction of new sections south of Zamość, extending to the border with Ukraine.

A total of 125 km of road is planned from Piaski to Hrebenne. Construction is divided into nine stages, and the total cost is approximately PLN 4.5 billion. Each section is at a different stage of implementation, ranging from obtaining permits to active construction work.

What will the new sections look like?

The S17 will be a modern two-lane expressway with complete infrastructure. The project includes:

- construction of overpasses and engineering structures,

- lighting and drainage systems,

- noise barriers,

- animal crossings,

- a modern traffic management system.

Thus, the new road will not only be fast, but also safe and environmentally balanced.

Where is work already underway?

The first large-scale work has started on two sections:

Zamość-East – Zamość-South

Tomaszów Lubelski-South – Hrebenne

Their total length is almost 30 km. The work is being carried out by Budimex, and the contracts are worth over PLN 1 billion.

The Tomaszów-Lubelski – Hrebenne section (17 km) is particularly important and is being financed with EU support. As part of the Connecting Europe program, the project has received a grant of over €61 million. Currently, embankments are being actively constructed, the ground is being reinforced, overpasses are being erected, and animal crossings are being built.

Preparatory work is still ongoing near Zamość, including the reconstruction of utility networks and the demolition of buildings.

What's next?

This year, GDDKiA expects to receive a construction permit for the Zamość-South – Tomaszów Lubelski section (18.5 km). Applications are also being prepared for three more sections between Piaski and Zamość (45 km).

By the end of the year, tenders should be announced for two missing sections with a total length of over 20 km:

Lopiennik – Krasnystaw,

Zamość-Sitanec – Zamość-Wschód.

A separate project is being developed for a short (2 km) section near Hrebenne – the access road to the border terminal with Ukraine, which will be implemented by the Lublin Border Crossing Service.
