Cyprus has officially announced its intention to join the Schengen area in 2026, Cyprus Mail reports.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulides, confirmed that the country plans to complete technical preparations by the end of 2025. This step will be of strategic importance for both Cyprus and the European Union.

What is the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Area is an area without internal borders that allows free travel between member countries without passport control. As of 2025, it includes 29 countries, including most EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Why is this important for Ukrainians?

For Ukrainian citizens who have a biometric passport, the Schengen area offers visa-free stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Cyprus joining Schengen will mean:

A single approach to entry – there will no longer be separate visa requirements for Cyprus.

Free movement – it will be possible to visit Cyprus together with other Schengen countries without additional procedures.

Simplification for tourists and business – less bureaucracy and more convenient travel routes.

Problems on the road to Schengen

Cyprus remains a divided island. The internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus is in the south, and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is in the north. A UN-controlled buffer zone and unofficial crossing points complicate the implementation of the single border control requirement, which is a key condition for Schengen membership.

What to expect in 2026?

If Cyprus successfully completes the technical and political preparations, then:

Controls at its border crossing points will be integrated into the Schengen system.

Entry into Cyprus will become part of the common Schengen area.

Ukrainians will no longer have to take into account separate requirements for Cyprus when traveling in Europe.
