Intercity will connect all regional centers of Ukraine: what will change for passengers

UZ plans to connect all regional centers of Ukraine with Intercity trains, increasing the frequency of flights and introducing a continuous movement model. Find out more about what this means for passengers and how traveling in Ukraine will change
Ukrzaliznytsia announces a large-scale upgrade of rail service: all regional centers of Ukraine are to be connected by Intercity trains. This was announced by Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of the company, in Serhiy Zhadan's podcast “Circular Defense,” Rail.insider reports.
Flights every two hours - like in Europe
According to Pertsovsky, the goal of Ukrzaliznytsia is to create a single high-speed network that will cover all regional centers. In particular, he cites the example of Lviv, where Intercity trains are planned to run every two hours.
"The goal is to connect all regional centers with Intercity trains. We want a train to run to Lviv every two hours,” said the head of UZ. He emphasized that thanks to a more dynamic schedule, Ukrainians will more often choose the train as the main mode of transportation for traveling within the country.
Ryanair model on Ukrainian railways
Oleksandr Pertsovsky noted that after the full-scale invasion of Russia, the number of Intercity flights has increased significantly. The company has moved to more active use of rolling stock, implementing a model that Pertsovsky compares to Ryanair.
"Our trains do not stand still. They are constantly in motion," he explained. According to him, one car used to carry an average of 5-6 thousand passengers a year, but now this figure has almost doubled to 10-11 thousand passengers.
The ambitious plan to connect all regional centers with high-speed rail is not just about convenience. It is also a step towards increasing the mobility of Ukrainians, strengthening national unity and integrating the regions in a difficult time for the country.
The implementation of such a project will require significant investments, infrastructure modernization, and rolling stock renewal. However, Ukrzaliznytsia demonstrates determination and consistency in the development of modern, affordable and efficient rail transport in Ukraine.
