Germany has programmes that make it easier for citizens and visitors to use public transport. For example, there is a €49 travel pass for the whole country, and a €29 pass in the capital, Berlin. Here's how they work and where to buy them, with reference to The-berliner.com.

The 29 EUR travel pass

This travel card will start working again from 1 July exclusively in the Berlin area. The ticket is purchased on a monthly basis, similar to a subscription: after registering, your account will be charged 29 euros per month. Please note that the €29 ticket has a minimum subscription period of one year, so you can only cancel it after 12 months. After the first year, you can cancel or renew your subscription on a monthly basis.

With this ticket (also known as the "Berlin Ticket") you can travel on all regional trains, S-Bahns, U-Bahn, trams and buses in zones A and B of Berlin, which means you will need an additional ticket to travel in zone C (which includes BER airport).

Where can I buy tickets for 29 euros?

You can book a 29 EUR ticket here on the BVG website, via one of the BVG apps (BVG Fahrinfo, BVG Ticket-App or BVG Jelbi) or at a ticket office. 

You have to order the subscription fee of EUR 29 by the 10th of the calendar month to make it effective from the 1st of the following month. For example, if you want to start using the ticket on 1 July, you need to purchase it before 10 June.

The €49 travel card for all of Germany

The €49 ticket covers the whole country. It is also known as the Deutschlandticket. It gives you access to all public transport throughout the country with the exception of most S-Bahn (ICE, IC or EC) trains. Here are the high speed trains you can use the ticket on:

- Berlin Main Station and Elsterwerda Station;

- Main railway stations in Potsdam and Cottbus;

- Berlin Südkreuz and Prenzlau;

- BVG ferries: water public transport in Berlin.

Like its Berliner Ticket counterpart, the pass works as a subscription, which means that €49 will be deducted from your account every month after registration. The Deutschlandticket is valid from 1 May 2023.

Where can I buy the 49 EUR ticket?

You can buy your ticket subscription on the Deutsche Bahn website, in the Deutsche Bahn Navigator app or at Deutsche Bahn Travel Centres nationwide. You can also choose to receive a digital ticket on your phone or a plastic card with a microchip that will be sent to you by post.

How do I cancel my 49 EUR ticket?

You will need to cancel your Deutschlandticket before the 10th of the month. The easiest way to do this is to use the cancellation form available here or in the Deutsche Bahn app.

Discounts on travel tickets

If you work for a company with at least 5 employees, you and your colleagues are entitled to a Firmenticket (or "company ticket") for the Deutschlandticket, which is reduced to €34.30 per month. As for the 29 EUR ticket, the Firmenticket discount is not available.
