Transcarpathia has long been famous for its winemaking — the traditions of this region date back almost 2,000 years. The climate of the region is extremely favourable for viticulture, as the Carpathian Mountains protect it from the Arctic air masses coming from the north. Local families have been engaged in this business for years: there can be up to 40 wine cellars on one street.
Today, Transcarpathia is developing wine tourism, offering a unique experience of tasting authentic Ukrainian wines in picturesque locations.
Which wineries are worth visiting and where to try the best Transcarpathian wines — we will tell you more in this article.
Berehove: a classic of Transcarpathian winemaking
Chateau Chizay is the most famous winery in Berehove, managing 272 hectares of vineyards and producing high-quality wines. The winery works with white and red European varieties: Traminer Rosé, Riesling Rhine, Muscat Ottonel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc.
Once upon a time, the most famous wine producer in Transcarpathia was the Berehove Winery, which produced more than 10 varieties of wine, and its calling card was ‘Rose of Transcarpathia’. The traditions of Berehove winemaking live on today.
Where to try: Berehove wine tastings are included in the tours ‘Cheese and Wine Tour of Transcarpathia’ and ‘10 Highlights of Transcarpathia’ from Visit Ukraine.
Uzhhorod: special wines of the Transcarpathian region
As the regional centre, Uzhhorod concentrates the best traditions of Transcarpathian winemaking. Both large wineries and small family wineries operate here, creating unique signature wines.
The vineyards around Uzhhorod are located on the slopes of hills, which provides ideal conditions for growing different grape varieties. Local winemakers are particularly proud of their white wines, which are distinguished by their freshness and refined bouquet.
Recommended wines: Locally produced Riesling, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mukachevo: the wine heritage of a historic city
Mukachevo is one of the three most promising Transcarpathian cities for the development of wine tourism, combining historical heritage with modern winemaking technologies.
The vineyards in the vicinity of Mukachevo are located next to the Cotnar and Chizay vineyards, making this place one of the best wine-growing regions in Transcarpathia. Local wineries are actively developing wine tourism, offering guests a full cycle of introduction to winemaking.
Features: tastings with a view of Palanok, Mukachevo's medieval castle.
Khust: wine traditions in the heart of the Carpathians
Khust, located in a picturesque valley, has a rich tradition of viticulture. Local wineries specialise in creating wines from indigenous grape varieties, which give the drinks a special Transcarpathian character.
Khust's wineries offer not only tastings but also tours of the vineyards with stories about the region's terroir. Of particular interest are the wine cellars, where centuries-old traditions of wine ageing are preserved.
Where to try: Khust wine tasting is included in the Visit Ukraine ‘Chill in Transcarpathia’ tour programme.
Kholmok: family traditions of winemaking
The village of Kholmok is famous for its family wineries. Here you can get acquainted with authentic Transcarpathian winemaking in its original form.
Holmok winemakers offer a unique experience — from grape harvesting to tasting the finished product in atmospheric wine cellars. Wine tourism here is mainly a family business, which adds a special authenticity to the experience.
Signature wines: homemade wines from local grape varieties, herbal liqueurs.
