Visa to Lithuania: types and requirements


For a long stay in Lithuania (more than 90 days), Ukrainian citizens who do not have temporary protection status usually need a national visa (type D).


Work visa to Lithuania


To work in Lithuania and obtain a type D work visa, you usually need to have:

– an official job offer (employment contract) from a Lithuanian employer.

– a work permit (if required for the profession, although there may be exceptions for Ukrainian citizens who are entitled to temporary protection).

– proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself.

– a document confirming your place of residence in Lithuania.

– a valid foreign passport.

Student visa for Lithuania


To obtain a type D student visa, you must provide:

– proof of residence in Lithuania (e.g. a dormitory lease agreement).

– a valid foreign passport.

How to move to Lithuania: preparation stages


First step: choose the type of visa


Determine the purpose of your trip (work, study, family reunification, etc.) and select the appropriate type of visa or basis for obtaining a residence permit. This will affect the package of required documents and the application procedure.

How to obtain a residence permit in Lithuania?


Obtaining a temporary residence permit (TRP) in Lithuania is carried out through the Migration Department of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania. The general grounds for obtaining a TRP are as follows:


Employment: having an employment contract with a Lithuanian employer.


Education: enrolment in a Lithuanian educational institution.


Family reunification: close relatives who are Lithuanian citizens or have a TRP.


Business/investment: registration of a company or investment in accordance with the law.


Other grounds: provided for by the legislation of the Republic of Lithuania.


The procedure involves submitting an application and a complete set of documents to the Migration Department (or through Lithuanian diplomatic missions abroad). All foreign documents usually need to be translated into Lithuanian and notarised/apostilled. In what cases can you be denied a residence permit in Lithuania?


According to the information available on the official website of the Lithuanian Migration Department, a residence permit may be denied or extended for the following reasons:

– Providing false information or forged documents.

– Insufficient financial means to live in Lithuania.

– Lack of a confirmed place of residence.

– Criminal record or commission of serious crimes.

– Threat to national security, public order or health.

– Violation of migration legislation during previous stays in Lithuania or the Schengen area.

– Non-payment of taxes or other mandatory payments.

– Recognition of marriage/adoption as fictitious, concluded solely for the purpose of obtaining a TRP.

– Lack of grounds for obtaining a TRP as provided by law.
