Kyiv residents will once again have to abandon their traditional summer vacation on the beaches. The Kyiv city authorities have confirmed that this year's swimming season will not be officially opened in the capital.
The relevant decision of the City Defense Council of May 17, 2023, remains in force this summer, given the ongoing martial law in Ukraine.
Safety comes first
The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) explains that the main reason for the restrictions is the safety of the population in the context of russia's armed aggression.
In the event of an air raid, large crowds on the beaches can lead to difficulties in accessing shelters and increase the risk to life.
“Restrictions have been introduced for security reasons under martial law... Recreation on the beaches remains undesirable,” the Kyiv authorities said in a statement.
The decision was also supported by the Standing Committee on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Beaches under control, but no swimming
Despite the ban on the official opening of the season, special services continue to carry out the necessary seasonal activities. These include:
cleaning the areas near water bodies;
sanitation and laboratory testing of water quality;
inspecting areas for explosives, including rocket and drone fragments.
In addition, in places with seasonal rescue posts, loudspeaker warnings will be heard every 15 minutes during the alarms, asking people to leave the danger zone.
The Kyiv City State Administration reminds that numerous restrictions are in place throughout Ukraine under martial law. In particular, in many regions, it is forbidden to visit forests and navigate some water bodies.
What happened last year?
In 2024, despite the official ban, some Kyiv residents started visiting beaches in April.
On April 10, the first vacationers were seen sunbathing and even swimming in the Dnipro at Venice Beach. At that time, the air temperature reached +26 °C, and the water warmed up to 12 °C. However, two weeks later, the authorities officially confirmed that the swimming season would not open.
Although the weather is expected to be hot this year, Kyiv residents are asked to understand the authorities' decisions. Safety in times of war is a priority, and recreation by the water is still risky.
The Kyiv city authorities also draw the attention of foreign citizens to the fact that due to martial law and the increased risk of air raids and shelling, visits to beaches and crowded areas near water bodies are strictly discouraged.
Foreigners staying in Kyiv or planning to visit Ukraine under martial law are advised to take out a special war risks insurance policy. Such a policy covers unforeseen situations related to hostilities and provides additional protection of life and health. You can apply for a suitable policy in a few minutes on the Visit Ukraine website.
Just a reminder! To plan a trip to Ukraine, a foreigner needs to resolve a large number of issues related to entry and stay in the country. Read about the rules of entry to Ukraine for foreigners in 2025 here.
