Ukraine is a country with a rich history, unique culture and hospitable people. However, as in any other country, there are certain peculiarities that foreigners should take into account to avoid misunderstandings and unpleasant situations. Some rules relate to cultural aspects, others to security, and some of them are of a legal nature.
Let's take a look at the most important things to keep in mind when traveling in Ukraine or interacting with its residents. By following these tips, you will not only maintain good relations with the locals, but also make your trip comfortable and safe.
What not to do in Ukraine: prohibitions for visitors
1. Do not call Ukraine Russia or the former USSR
Ukraine has been an independent state since 1991, and its history goes back further than the Soviet period. Such mistakes can cause a negative reaction or even conflict. It is worth remembering that Ukrainians have their own culture, traditions and language, which should not be equated with Russian. Even in casual conversations with locals, avoid such comparisons.
2. Do not use the article the before Ukraine
In English, it is correct to say “Ukraine”, not “the Ukraine”. Adding the article has a historical connotation of subordination and can be perceived as disrespectful. The use of “the Ukraine” is associated with the Soviet era and implies that Ukraine is part of something larger, rather than an independent state. This is a sensitive issue for locals, so it is best to get it right from the start.
3. Do not ignore the Ukrainian language
Ukrainian is the official language, and even a few words in Ukrainian (“Thank you”, “Please”) will show your respect for the locals. Even if you don't speak the language, try to use basic expressions to help establish friendly contact. Ukrainians appreciate it when foreigners try to speak their language, even if it's just a few words.

4. Do not take pictures of the military and strategic objects
Because of the war, taking pictures of the military, checkpoints, or critical infrastructure can lead to problems with law enforcement. This is not only a security issue, but also a threat to national defense. In some cases, you may be suspected of espionage and your camera or phone may be confiscated for inspection. Be careful and avoid taking any photos or videos of military installations.
5. Do not ignore air raid warnings
If you hear a siren, you should immediately take cover. This is not a formality, but a necessary safety measure. Ignoring the signal can be life-threatening. It is important to know in advance where the nearest shelters are and follow the instructions of local authorities.
6. Do not call Kyiv “Kyiv” or use Russian versions of place names
The correct name for the capital is Kyiv, not “Kiev”. The same applies to Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and other cities. Using Ukrainian names is not only grammatically correct, but also a demonstration of respect for the country's sovereignty. Ukrainians are sensitive to this issue because changing city names was part of the Russification policy in the past.
7. Do not confuse borsch with Russian cuisine
Borsch is a part of Ukrainian cultural heritage, officially recognized by UNESCO. Calling it a “Russian dish” is a gross misnomer. Ukrainians are proud of their borsch, and each region has its own unique recipe. If you want to make a good impression, ask the locals about their favorite way to prepare this dish.
8. Do not drink alcohol in public places
It is against the law and can lead to a fine or even problems with the police. Drinking alcohol is only allowed in designated areas such as restaurants, bars, or private spaces. Violation of this rule may result in administrative penalties or even attract the attention of law enforcement.
9. Do not violate any prohibitions on the use of drones
Drones can be seen as a threat, and using them without permission can have serious consequences. Certain areas, especially near military installations or strategic infrastructure, are strictly off-limits to drone operations. If you want to use a drone, find out in advance about the necessary permits.
10. Do not discuss politics and war without knowing the context
These topics are very sensitive for Ukrainians. You should avoid political controversies or statements that may seem provocative. Ukrainians are well-informed about the situation in the country and have their own opinions about the war and politics. If you are unsure of your understanding of the situation, it is best to refrain from commenting or listen carefully to the views of the locals.
Ukraine is a country that is going through difficult times, but it remains open and hospitable to tourists. Following these simple rules will help you avoid misunderstandings and make your trip comfortable, safe and enjoyable. Ukrainians highly value respect for their culture, history, and traditions, so even small efforts on your part will be well received.
