Anti-Ukrainian sentiment is growing in Romania as the presidential election scheduled for May 2025 approaches. This is reported by G4 Media.
The leader of the far-right party AUR (Alliance for the Unification of Romanians), Gheorghe Simion, who is currently the favorite in the election race, has openly announced his intention to stop state support for Ukrainian refugees.
Anti-Ukrainian rhetoric in Romania: Simion wants to curtail support for refugees
In an interview with Radio Europa FM on April 14, Simion was asked whether he plans to cut aid to Ukrainians if he wins. His answer was unequivocal:
“Until we bring Romanian citizens out of poverty to an acceptable level, I will no longer support other nations in Romania.”
These words became part of the politician's broader nationalist rhetoric. He often refers to the idea of “fairly supporting only Romanians” and actively advocates for the unification of Romania with Moldova.

Moldova - separatism and anti-Romanianism?
In his speeches, Simion also criticizes financial support for Moldova. According to him, this is not just economic aid, but allegedly “sponsorship of separatism.”
"The Russians, the Soviet authorities, came to our land in Soroca, in Tighina (now Bender). They created a Soviet republic, then an independent one. And since then, we are supposedly obliged to finance the Republic of Moldova. This is a stigma."
Such statements raise concerns not only in the Ukrainian but also in the European community, as Romania has been one of the key EU countries that has supported Ukrainian IDPs since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion.
Despite the tension in Simion's statements, Moldova continues to pursue its European integration course. Since 2025, the country has abandoned its peg to the dollar, choosing the euro as the base currency for setting the official exchange rate of the national leu.
This move further distances Chisinau from its Soviet past and brings it closer to EU standards, contrary to the rhetoric of some politicians in neighboring Romania.
