After russia's invasion in 2022, many Ukrainian companies began to actively develop their operations in Europe, looking for new opportunities for development. As they strengthen their positions in Central Europe, they are gradually changing their strategy from the initial focus on Ukrainian refugees to attracting local customers. Some companies are even considering entering more western markets, Reuters reports.
Business expansion: examples and trends
According to Polish business associations, in Poland, where the Ukrainian population exceeded 1.5 million people, every tenth new business in 2024 was started by Ukrainians. This indicates that Ukrainian entrepreneurs are highly active and take advantage of favorable conditions for development.
For example, the Lviv Croissants chain led by Andriy Galytsky opened 12 outlets in Poland in two years, and in October 2024 launched its first establishment in the Czech Republic. This is part of a strategy aimed at creating a geographically diverse business. Galitsky noted that relying solely on the Ukrainian diaspora as a customer base is not a long-term strategy.
The !FEST restaurant group, which operates the P'yana Vyshnia chain, has also relied on local consumers. Since the beginning of the war, the company has opened 15 outlets in Poland and nine in other Baltic and Eastern European countries. In 2025, the group plans to enter the markets of Germany, Switzerland, and France, as well as return to London. Co-founder Andrzej Hudo noted that such establishments attract new audiences and bring in stable profits.
Poland as a launching pad
Poland has become a natural base for many Ukrainian companies due to its cultural and economic similarities with Ukraine. However, it is increasingly seen not as an end goal, but as a springboard to wider EU markets.
Dariusz Szymczykha, First Vice President of the Polish-Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that Ukrainian entrepreneurs use Poland to adapt to the standards and rules of working in the European Union. This approach helps companies better prepare for large-scale expansion to the West.

Prospects in Western markets
Ukrainian business is demonstrating dynamic development and flexibility, moving from dependence on the diaspora to focusing on local communities. The war has become a catalyst for change, forcing companies to rethink their strategies and integrate more actively into Western European economies.
This trend demonstrates the high potential of Ukrainian entrepreneurs and their desire to adapt to new realities. At the same time, further expansion to the West may become a key stage in the globalization of Ukrainian business.
