The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has given recommendations on a new format for student education in the next academic year. Here's what you need to know about the innovations.

The Ministry explains that the recommendations are related to the ongoing shelling of critical infrastructure by russia, which leads to restrictions on the use of energy resources throughout Ukraine.

They emphasise that this affects the safety of all participants in the educational process and educational institutions.

What changes should students expect?

First of all, the Ministry of Education and Science recommends that higher education and professional higher education institutions start the academic year 2024/2025 in the first half of August 2024, if possible. This applies to educational programmes of all levels and all students except first-year students.

Other recommendations:

- Use Saturdays as working days in the warmer months of the year.

- From mid-November 2024 to mid-March 2025, plan to hold an examination session, practical training, coursework and qualification papers, and extended holidays, and if necessary, continue classes in a distance format.

- If necessary, extend the educational process in the 2024/2025 academic year until the end of July 2025, except for graduation courses.

- Conduct the educational process in traditional (classroom) or mixed (classroom and distance) formats in the premises of the educational institution or its separate building within the design capacity of civil protection facilities.

In the rear regions, ensure that the educational process is conducted mainly in a classroom format, taking into account the safety of participants in the educational process and in agreement with regional military administrations.

- In the frontline and border regions where there is a risk of artillery shelling, MLRS, bomb (CAB) and missile (S-300) attacks, etc., the educational process can be conducted in shelters. In coordination with regional military administrations, it can be conducted on the basis of other educational institutions in the rear regions in a mixed or (as an exception) remote format.

- Provide for the functioning of local warning systems for the receipt of the "Air Alert" signal or other relevant warning signals in educational buildings and dormitories of educational institutions.

By the way, we mentioned earlier that Ukrainian universities are annually included in the rankings of the most prestigious universities in the world. There are a number of well-known educational institutions across the country that are famous for their history and reputation. Read about the best universities in Ukraine that are internationally recognised here.

At the same time, for vocational (vocational-technical) education institutions:

- If possible, start the academic year earlier than 1 September for second- and third-year VET students.

- Use Saturdays as working days during the warmer months of the year. If necessary, it is also possible to extend the educational process until the end of July 2025, except for graduation courses.

- Organise training in a face-to-face format with mandatory availability of shelters. If there is an insufficient number of places in shelters, training can be organised in shifts. Important: Depending on the situation in the region, regional military state administrations may decide to conduct the educational process in a distance or mixed form.

- If it is not possible to organise internships in the usual way, we recommend using training workshops and laboratories of VET institutions, and, if necessary and possible, providing them remotely.

The recommendations will soon be available to secondary education institutions.

We remind you! The Parliament has passed a law on higher education reform that opens up new prospects for students. The document envisages significant changes in the higher education system that will affect the learning process and students' rights. One of the key changes is the ability of students to determine their own educational trajectory. Read more about the reform here.
