The last presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine were held five years ago, in 2019, when the current head of state, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and his Servant of the People party won. According to the Constitution, one presidential and parliamentary term is 5 years, meaning that Ukraine should have had elections this year. Here's a look at when they might be held and what Ukrainian citizens think about them.

As you know, in connection with the invasion of the russian army in 2022, martial law was introduced in the country, which makes it impossible to hold elections while the state is in this status.

Thus, it is currently impossible to hold parliamentary presidential elections in Ukraine. However, as the Constitution states, they should be announced within a month after the end of martial law.

Elections in Ukraine: do Ukrainians want to hold them now?

Many Western media outlets have repeatedly written that the West may put pressure on Ukraine to hold elections to "legitimise the government". But during a time of war and under the occupation of legitimate Ukrainian regions, it is very difficult to hold a vote. Moreover, it would require a significant amount of money, which Ukraine does not have because it spends it on the army.

In February, a poll was conducted in the country by the Rating sociological group. The results of the survey showed that the majority of Ukrainians do not support the idea of holding the next elections during the war - presidential, parliamentary or local.

According to the infographic released by the sociologists, the majority of respondents do not support the idea of holding presidential elections in Ukraine during the war: 67% (49% of respondents chose the answer "definitely do not support", another 18% - "rather do not support").

At the same time, 30% of respondents support the idea of presidential elections during martial law (17% - definitely, 13% - rather).

As for the elections to the Verkhovna Rada, 33% of respondents support their holding during martial law (18% - definitely yes, 15% - rather yes); 63% do not support (44% - definitely against, 19% - rather no).

The behaviour of local elections during martial law is supported by slightly more Ukrainians (39%). At the same time, the majority is still against this idea - 57% of respondents.

Fateful 20 May or how russia wants to undermine the situation in Ukraine?

Earlier, Ukraine made an official statement that russian special services were conducting Operation Maidan-3 in the country, which the occupiers launched in 2023 to destabilise the situation in the neighbouring country.

As explained by Ukrainian intelligence, as part of Operation Maidan-3, the occupiers want to undermine the situation inside Ukraine. The russians consider mass protests across the country and distrust of the authorities to be its successful outcome.

Simply put, the russians, using IPSO and other tools, want to undermine Ukrainians' trust in the government after 20 May, when the term of office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly expires. The russians want to play on the idea that the Ukrainian leader no longer has any authority because his presidency has expired. But the Constitution of Ukraine explicitly states that a president's term cannot end without elections, and elections are impossible during a war.

In total, the russians spent about $1.5 billion on this special operation, making it the most expensive in the history of russian special services. The russians are planning to undermine the situation in Ukraine in the first half of June, and, according to their plan, then, taking advantage of the situation, the Ukrainian army will be defeated militarily in the east.

In spite of everything, the first phases of the russian operation have failed, according to Ukrainian intelligence.
