Travelling abroad in someone else's car is not prohibited by law, but certain conditions must be met. In this case, a driver who is not the owner of the car may travel abroad, but must carry a more extensive list of documents than the owner of the car.

What documents are required for travelling abroad in someone else's car?

1. Driver's licence

2. Ukrainian identification mark on the car (UA), if this mark is not on the car's number plate

3. Green Card insurance policy for the car for the entire period of stay abroad

5. In addition to the above documents, you will need a notarised power of attorney with a mark for travelling abroad. The owner of the car who is abroad can issue a power of attorney at the embassy or consulate of Ukraine.

The car must also have a Ukrainian identification mark (UA sticker) and number plates.

At the same time, the Main Service Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs informs that in order to cross the border in a vehicle that does not belong to them, a person must obtain a temporary registration certificate for travelling abroad or a notarised power of attorney from the car owner with such a note.

How to obtain a certificate for travelling abroad in someone else's car?

To do this, you must contact the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre together with the car owner and obtain a vehicle registration certificate for travelling abroad. You must have the following with you:

- passport;

- identification code;

- vehicle registration certificate.

Upon return to Ukraine, the certificate must be returned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centre within 10 days.

Power of attorney to drive someone else's car abroad: how to obtain it?

A power of attorney to drive someone else's car will only be valid if the following conditions are met:

- The document has been translated into the language of the country to which the trip is planned (an official translation is required);

- The document has been legalised in accordance with the established procedure (depending on the country to which the trip is planned, this may be an apostille or consular legalisation).

Please note that this procedure is more complicated than obtaining a certificate for travelling abroad in someone else's car from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and is therefore less popular in Ukraine.

Where can I buy a Green Card for my car to travel abroad?

A Green Card insurance policy is mandatory for travelling abroad by car, as without it you will simply not be allowed to pass through checkpoints. The insurance must be valid for the entire period of your stay abroad. If the trip requires more time, the Green Card can be extended.
