The use of the Ukrainian language is increasing on social media. In 2023, over 90% of Instagram posts and 75% of Facebook posts were written in Ukrainian. If we take into account the temporarily occupied territories and russian social media used by individual Ukrainians, every second post is written in russian.

This is according to a study published on October 30 by the Center for Content Analysis.

Popularization of the Ukrainian language on social media: the latest data

"According to the results of the study, it can be stated that over the past three years, Ukrainian social networks have come a long way from a state of almost complete russification to the predominant role of the Ukrainian language," the organization said in a post on Facebook.

According to the data, posts on Facebook, Twitter (X), and Instagram confirmed the trend of strengthening the role of the Ukrainian language. While in 2020 the share ranged from 15-25%, and in 2022 it rose to 65-70%, now more than 90% of posts on Instagram are written in Ukrainian, and 75-80% on Facebook and Twitter (X).

The authors of the study suggest that the trend will continue, although perhaps at a slower pace.

YouTube showed the biggest growth. While in June 2022, researchers found no changes compared to the period before February, now Ukrainian-language content has reached 45%.

The share of the Ukrainian language on TikTok has doubled: if earlier the ratio was 1 to 2 in favor of russian, now it is 2 to 1 in favor of Ukrainian.

In which regions are posts made in Ukrainian more often?

The researchers note that Sumy region showed significant progress (+16%). Kyiv region, with almost 84% of posts in Ukrainian, is ahead of Zakarpattia and is close to the Western macro-region in terms of language behavior.

Also, for the first time, Ukrainian has stronger positions than russian in Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Mykolaiv regions.

Ukrainian now prevails in all regions except for the partially occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions, Crimea, and Odesa region. But this region also showed significant growth: the share of posts in Ukrainian increased from 27% in June 2022 to 49% in October 2023.

How was the analysis created?

For the analysis, we collected posts from Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, Youtube, TikTok, as well as from the banned but still used russian VK and OK. The frequency of use in each social network of pairs of words (lexemes) that have different roots in Ukrainian and russian was calculated.

In total, 1.17 million posts containing such lexemes were collected and analyzed between September 20 and October 20, 2023, by users who indicated Ukraine (or the occupied Ukrainian regions) in their profiles.
