Austrian rail carrier OeBB recently introduced new night trains to support its initiative to promote vehicles that are less harmful to the environment than planes and petrol or diesel cars. We will tell you more about the new improved carriages and planned routes in the article below.
Night trains: what we know
Night trains are gaining rapid popularity in Europe due to their environmental friendliness and low carbon emissions compared to conventional means of transport. After years of inactivity, there is now a high level of investment in this mode of transport.
Austrian state-owned railway operator OeBB, which currently operates around 20 routes across Europe, was the first to revive and promote so-called night trains. OeBB currently has the largest fleet of night trains in Europe, and by 2030 the company plans to increase the number of its passengers from 1.5 million to 3 million.
New and improved design of night trains
Representatives of the carrier note that the new sleeper trains have a modern design and comfortable conditions. Each double compartment has a separate toilet and shower.
The carrier has even taken care of those travelling alone: the trains feature single compartments for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and privacy.
"I remember the old night trains, which were very small and dark - a small window, bunk beds and curtains. Compared to the old trains, the new carriages are a luxury," says Rosemary, a 69-year-old pensioner, commenting on the new and improved carriage.
The first of the 33 upgraded night trains is due to enter service in December 2023 and will connect Vienna and Innsbruck with Hamburg.
The carrier plans to launch night trains to other destinations in Austria, as well as Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy by 2028. After obtaining the relevant permits from the national railway authority, sleeper routes may also be launched in France.

Protecting the environment with renewable energy
"Every kilometre travelled on the advanced night train is a kilometre of climate protection and a contribution to a better future. Getting on a train in Vienna in the evening and waking up the next morning in another European city - what could be more comfortable?" comments Austrian Environment Minister Leonora Gewessler.
Since 2018, all OeBB trains have been powered by electricity generated exclusively by solar, wind and hydroelectric power.
The first night passenger service is scheduled for December this year on the Vienna - Hamburg and Innsbruck - Hamburg lines. Pre-sale of tickets starts on 11 October.
