The defense of Donetsk airport has become one of the most tragic and at the same time heroic pages in Ukraine's modern history. For almost eight months, the Ukrainian military held off terrorist attacks in the destroyed terminals, without proper shelter or rest. They were called “cyborgs” for a reason - for their endurance, which is difficult to explain with ordinary human logic. Today, this feat has not only historical but also deep moral significance.

Who are the “cyborgs” and how long did the defense of Donetsk airport last?

The defense of Donetsk airport began in May 2014 and lasted for 242 days until January 2015. Ukrainian soldiers, volunteers, and fighters from various units held their positions in the face of constant shelling, destruction of the terminals, and an acute lack of basic living conditions. The airport was of great strategic importance, as control over it allowed to restrain the militants' advance towards Donetsk.

The name “cyborgs” was not a coincidence - the defenders were called that by the enemy, who did not believe that people could withstand such a load. The soldiers spent weeks among concrete and rubble, without normal sleep, under the constant threat of artillery strikes and assaults. They held the line even when the buildings were virtually destroyed.

Despite the extremely difficult conditions, the DAP defenders fulfilled their main task - they stopped the enemy and showed that the Ukrainian army is capable of resisting a much stronger enemy. Their courage, endurance and strength of spirit became a moral support for the whole country and a symbol of a new stage of Ukrainian resistance.

January 20 is the official Day of Remembrance of the DAP Defenders

On January 20, Ukraine commemorates the defenders of Donetsk Airport at the state level. It was on this day in 2015 that the last battles for the new terminal ended, and after numerous shelling and bombings, it finally turned into ruins. For the country, this date has become a symbol not of defeat, but of unbreakable strength and ultimate devotion to military duty.

The official status of the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of the DAP was granted to preserve the truth about those events and to remind us of the price Ukraine paid for the right to remain free. Every year on January 20, memorial events, minutes of silence, laying flowers at monuments and meetings with the families of the fallen soldiers are held across the country.

This day is not a formal date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the extraordinary people who consciously took a mortal risk in the performance of their duty. The state recognized their feat officially, but the real honor lives on in the memory of society, in military traditions, and in the modern struggle for independence.

Why is the memory of the DAP defenders especially important today?

The feat of the defenders of Donetsk airport has long gone beyond a single military operation. It has become a moral point of support for society, an example of how to hold on even when it seems that you have no more strength. In 2014-2015, the “cyborgs” were the first to show that the Ukrainian army is capable not only of defending itself but also of disrupting the enemy's plans with its resilience.

During a full-scale war, the significance of this feat is even more acute. The story of the defense of DAP resonates with Mariupol, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and dozens of other cities where the Ukrainian military have proven time and again that human dignity is stronger than fear. The memory of the airport defenders helps us realize that the current resistance has deep roots and is based on the experience of those who were among the first to go into battle.

Honoring this date is not just about the past. It is about responsibility to those who died and to those who continue to fight today. Preserving the memory of the “cyborgs” shapes national identity, supports morale, and reminds us that freedom is never given without sacrifice.
