Full-fledged pedestrian clearance has been launched on the border between Ukraine and Slovakia. On 14 January, a pedestrian lane for crossing the state border officially began operating on the Ukrainian side at the Uzhhorod checkpoint. This was reported by the State Border Service of Ukraine.

The crossing has begun full-fledged

The new infrastructure was set up as part of agreements between the governments of the two countries and connects the Ukrainian checkpoint with the Slovak checkpoint ‘Vyshneve Nemetske’.

In fact, pedestrian traffic through this section of the border began on 3 January, but only now have all the preparatory work necessary for the full operation of the pedestrian lane been completed. This is a specially equipped route between the checkpoint in Uzhhorod and the Slovak side in the Vyshne Nemecke area.

What is the workload of the new checkpoint?

According to border guards, about 4,000 people crossed the border on foot during the first days of the new lane's operation. Most of them are citizens of Ukraine. On average, about 400 pedestrians pass through border control here per day.

The opening of the pedestrian lane should simplify border crossing for those travelling without a car or public transport, as well as reduce the load on other checkpoints in the region.

Reminder! In 2026, separate rules for crossing the border will apply to men. Find out which categories of men can leave Ukraine without hindrance and what documents are required for this.
