Russia is preparing an attack on government buildings in Kyiv: what is known and when the attack may take place
Russian authorities have reported an ‘attack on Putin's residence’ and threatened retaliation. Amid tense negotiations and media pressure, Moscow is stepping up its rhetoric, while Kyiv warns of possible strikes on the capital and key facilities. Find out when Russia might launch a new attack
Russia accused Ukraine of ‘attacking the residence’ of dictator Vladimir Putin on the night of 29 December. In response, the Russian authorities announced that they were preparing a ‘retaliatory strike.’ Ukraine, in turn, denies attempting to strike the residence, saying that the Kremlin is trying to justify new strikes and influence the course of peace talks.
Russia's accusations
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Ukraine allegedly launched a drone strike on Putin's state residence in the Novgorod region.
"The Russian Federation's negotiating position will be revised in light of the Kyiv regime's final transition to a policy of state terrorism. The targets and timing of Russia's retaliatory strike following the attack on Putin's state residence have been determined,‘ he stressed.
Lavrov added that Russia does not intend to withdraw from the negotiation process following the alleged attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Putin's state residence.

Russia's accusations are a ’fake story"
In response, Zelensky called Lavrov's statement ‘another lie’ by the Russian Federation. He stressed that the Russians are looking for a reason to strike government buildings in Kyiv.
"Very dangerous statements have now been made by Russia, which are clearly aimed at undermining all the achievements of our joint work with President Trump's team. We are working together to bring peace closer,‘ he said.
Zelensky also called the Russians' statement about a strike on Putin's residence a ’fake story" to justify further attacks on Ukraine, in particular Kyiv. In addition, the Ukrainian leader added, the Russians need this to refuse to take the necessary steps to end the war.
‘This is a typical false tactic by the Russians. They have already struck Kyiv, in particular the building of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Ukraine does not take steps that could weaken diplomacy. Russia always takes such steps. This is one of the many things that distinguishes us,’ Zelensky emphasised.
When could Russia launch a new attack?
Ukrainian monitoring channels claim that Russia is preparing for a new missile and drone strike on Ukraine. The Telegram channel ‘Mykolaivsky Vanok,’ which informs citizens about the air situation in the country, claims that the Russian army was planning an attack on New Year's Eve.
‘It has been known for a long time that there would be shelling on New Year's Eve, because every New Year's Eve is the same. Nothing new,’ the message says.
