Five European cities have been named where a winter trip will be beautiful and affordable. Find out which destinations Travel Off Path recommends and how much a vacation in these locations costs
Traveling in Europe in winter is becoming more expensive, but even in 2025–2026, it is still possible to find destinations where comfortable and atmospheric leisure activities do not require large expenditures. Vinicius Costa, an expert at the travel publication Travel Off Path, has compiled a selection of five budget-friendly cities that offer attractive prices, unique architecture, and a distinctive atmosphere in winter. This is reported by Travel Off Path.
Despite the rising cost of living and transportation services, these destinations make it possible to travel around Europe more affordably, especially for Ukrainians who plan their own itineraries and seek the optimal balance between price and experience.
Below is an overview of the five best cities in Europe where a winter trip will be beautiful, diverse, and budget-friendly.
Gdańsk, Poland: a bright post-war wonder on the Baltic coast
Gdańsk is one of the most colorful cities in Poland, which, after post-war reconstruction, became a cozy center on the Motława River. Tourists are attracted here by the Old Town, Dluga Street with its colorful tenement houses, and a unique medieval port crane.
The city is distinguished by its very affordable prices:
● dinner at a budget restaurant: $10–15;
● mid-range restaurant: $30–40 for two;
● hostel: $20–30, 3★ hotel — $45–50;
● transport: $1.1–1.3, museums: $6–9.
This is a great option for those who want European architecture and the atmosphere of a fairytale town without high costs.
Riga, Latvia: the medieval heart of the Baltics and one of the oldest Christmas markets
Riga has preserved its unique Art Nouveau facades, majestic historic buildings, and narrow streets of the Old Town. Travelers are also attracted by the Christmas market, whose history dates back to 1510.
Average costs:
● dinner at a budget restaurant: $8–12;
● mid-range: $35–45 for two;
● hostel: $20–30, 3★ hotel — $44–50;
● transport: $1.6–1.7, museums — $8–9.
Riga is affordable, atmospheric, and convenient for travelers who want to combine winter magic with low vacation costs.

Thessaloniki, Greece: mild winter, sea, and ancient history
Greece's second-largest city becomes one of the most comfortable destinations in winter for those who want to escape the cold. Although the temperature can be cool, rain is rare here — only 4–5 days a month.
Prices are also reasonable:
● dinner: $11–17, mid-range — $28–40 for two;
● hostel: $25–35, 3★ hotel — $50–65;
● transport: $0.65–0.7, museums — $8–9.
Thessaloniki is ideal for those who want a winter without extreme cold and the opportunity to enjoy Greek cuisine by the sea.
Pontevedra, Spain: an ancient city on the Way of St. James
This city in Galicia has long been appreciated by travelers looking for quiet, aesthetic places without crowds. Pontevedra has preserved its Gothic center, arcaded squares, and local bars with inexpensive Spanish cuisine.
Average prices:
● dinner: $12–15, mid-range — $50–70 for two;
● hostel: $32–40, 3★ hotel — $70–90;
● transport: $2–3, museums — $6–10.
This is a good alternative to popular cities in Spain, where prices are significantly higher in winter.
Sofia, Bulgaria: a modern city with a multi-layered history
Sofia combines the influences of the Roman Empire, the Ottoman era, and Orthodox culture. Travelers note the large number of historical sites, affordable prices, and lack of tourist overload.
Prices:
● budget dinner: $9–12, mid-range — $25–35 for two;
● Hostel: $17–30, 3★ hotel — $40–60
● Transportation: $0.9, museums — $5–8
Sofia is one of the most affordable winter destinations in Eastern Europe.
