Loans in Poland for Ukrainians: can they get one and what nuances are important to consider
Many Ukrainians who have moved to Poland begin to think about buying a home, taking out a loan or obtaining additional financing for everyday expenses. However, the rules of Polish banks often differ from those in Ukraine, and the requirements for foreigners are sometimes stricter. Find out whether Ukrainians can get a loan in Poland, what conditions must be met and what influences the banks' decisions
After the start of full-scale war, Poland became one of the main destinations for Ukrainians. Millions of people are rebuilding their lives here — renting accommodation, working, and starting businesses. It is logical that interest in loans is growing: from simple consumer loans to mortgages.
We explain whether Ukrainians can count on a loan from a Polish bank and under what conditions.
Can Ukrainians get a loan in Poland?
Yes, they can. Polish banks officially work with foreigners, and Ukrainians have the right to apply on the same terms as Polish citizens. At the same time, there are no separate preferential programmes specifically for refugees in the country — banks consider applications according to standard internal rules.
In practice, loans are more often granted to those who have been living in Poland for some time, are officially employed and can document a stable income.
What are the requirements of banks?
Credit institutions evaluate Ukrainians according to the same criteria as Poles, but they check documents and length of stay in the country more carefully.
The main points they pay attention to are:
The bank must see the legality and duration of stay in Poland (usually from three months), confirmation of official employment and income, as well as an active account in a Polish bank. Credit history plays an important role: Polish banks can check Ukrainian registers — analogues of BIK and KRD, as well as data from the International Credit History Bureau. If there were any late payments or outstanding obligations in Ukraine, this will have a negative impact on the decision.
The main thing for the bank is to understand that the applicant has a stable income and is able to fulfil their credit obligations.

What types of loans are available to Ukrainians
Ukrainians can apply for almost any type of loan:
▪️ cash loan — the simplest option if you have a stable income;
▪️ instalment plans and credit cards — usually available to customers after a certain period of service with the bank;
▪️ mortgage — a real option, but the requirements are much stricter. Most often, you will need an Umowa o pracę (employment contract), a stable income and a clean credit history.
Newly arrived Ukrainians often start with consumer loans or instalment plans, and then apply for a mortgage.
What is important to consider before applying
There are several practical nuances that often cause applications to be rejected. The bank may reject an application not because of the documents, but because of unstable employment, short period of residence, or problems with credit history in Ukraine. Sometimes banks set higher interest rates or lower credit limits for foreigners.
Before applying, it is recommended to check your credit history in Ukraine and prepare all documents confirming your income and address in advance. The more transparent your financial situation is, the higher the likelihood of a positive decision.
