A street can tell you more about a city than any guidebook. That's why every year, Time Out magazine compiles a global ranking of the world's best streets — those that show the city as it really is. To compile the list, the editors enlisted their network of local journalists and experts, who evaluated each street according to several criteria: the quality of the food scene, cultural events, the presence of independent shops, the level of creativity, and the sense of local spirit.

In 2025, 31 streets from different continents made it into the ranking. The leader was Rua do Senado in Rio de Janeiro — a place where history coexists with a modern cultural explosion.

1st place — Rua do Senado, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The central part of Rio has long been famous for its bohemian atmosphere, but Rua do Senado is undergoing a new phase of development. Once known for its antique shops, it has become a dynamic center of creative life:

● The legendary Armazém Senado restaurant has been operating here since 1907.

● Free samba classes are held on Saturdays.

● new bars, workshops, and music venues are opening up alongside the historic buildings.

Local journalist Livia Breves notes that it is the combination of tradition and new cultural trends that has restored the street's popularity and made it a major tourist attraction.

All these streets have common features: authenticity, local entrepreneurs, and a “lively” urban rhythm that attracts tourists at any time of the year.

Why do streets determine the success of a trip?

Time Out experts emphasize that streets are the essence of urban life. It is here that tourists experience:

● gastronomic culture through local cafes;

● creative trends through art spaces and designer shops;

● local traditions through fairs, concerts, or small bars that only locals know about.

Traveling along such streets, tourists gain experiences that are not available in standard tourist locations.

What makes the streets on the list so attractive?

The publication's analysts highlight three key factors:

1. Authenticity. These are not artificial tourist streets, but places where locals live and relax. From street musicians to small designer workshops, everything creates a unique urban microclimate.

2. Independent businesses. Almost all of the streets on the list have dozens of cafes, bars, art galleries, and shops that are not affiliated with large chains.

3. Strong gastronomy. From street food in Chengdu to Portuguese signature restaurants, each of these streets has its own gastronomic highlights.
