New European gauge railway line to connect Lviv with Polish border: Oleksiy Kuleba announces start of construction
On Friday, November 7, Oleksiy Kuleba announced the start of construction of a second European standard railway track. Find out how much this major construction project will cost, when it will begin, and when it is scheduled for completion
On 7 November, Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery – Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba and Director of the European Commission for Transport Magda Kopczyńska launched the construction of a new European gauge railway line. This is the second time this project has been implemented in Ukraine – the first standard gauge track was opened two months ago (connecting Chop with Uzhhorod).
The new European standard track will stretch for 80 km and connect the Polish border with the Sknyliv railway station near Lviv. This will expand direct and joint connections with the European TEN-T network. Ukrainians have currently received a €73.5 million grant from the European Commission to implement the project (total cost – approximately €190 million). Construction is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.

“Such projects are part of the security not only of Ukraine, but also of the European Union. Every euro invested in Ukraine's transport system is a contribution to the stability and protection of the EU's borders. It helps Ukraine remain strong, resilient and committed to common European values. After all, today Ukraine is Europe's security belt," Oleksiy Kuleba points out on his Facebook page.
