Safe travel in the Carpathians: what you need to know before heading to the mountains

The Carpathians are a place where everyone can feel part of nature and test their strength. Every year, thousands of travellers head to the mountains to see Ukraine from above, but not everyone knows how to properly prepare for a hike. The Carpathians are not just mountains, but a challenge, inspiration and magic that thousands of Ukrainians discover for themselves every year. According to a report by UNIAN, in recent years more and more people have been heading to the highlands: some want to tick off Hoverla as a symbolic achievement, while others seek peace and quiet among the majestic peaks. But even the most experienced travellers will agree — there is no room for carelessness in the Carpathians.

How to prepare for a hike, when to go and why you should listen to the advice of rescuers — we'll tell you more below.

Mountains for everyone: inspiring stories

Climbing Hoverla, Petros or Pip Ivan has become a popular way to test yourself and feel at one with nature. There are examples of people with disabilities or young parents with babies in their arms conquering the peaks. The main thing is not physical strength, but motivation and willingness to overcome your own limitations.

For example, among those who have already conquered Hoverla are athletes with disabilities and families with small children. One such case is the ascent of a man on a prosthesis, who walked to the top with his family, overcoming slippery rocks and steep climbs. Another family carried a baby in a special backpack so that they could all watch the sunrise together at the highest point in Ukraine. Such stories prove that the main thing is not strength, but determination and love for life.

The mountains welcome everyone, but they demand respect. Experience shows that even familiar routes can become a challenge if you don't take weather conditions into account or overestimate your abilities.

When to go hiking: season and weather risks

Rescuers remind us that the best time to climb is in summer, when the trails are dry and the temperature is comfortable. In spring, there is still snow on the peaks, and in autumn, it often rains and fog descends.

Rescuers' experience shows that even on a hot day, the weather can change dramatically in a matter of hours — a downpour can begin, fog can descend, or a cold wind can pick up. That is why experts advise always taking a light jacket with a hood and a plastic raincoat with you, as well as checking the forecast not only for the day of departure, but also for the day of descent.

A common mistake made by beginners is underestimating the temperature: it can be 10–12° colder at the top than at the bottom.

By the way, it is quieter on the routes on weekdays — rescuers advise avoiding peak weekends, when there is literally a ‘living queue’ on the trails to Hoverla.

Routes and ascents: how to choose your path?

Hoverla can be climbed from different sides — the most popular routes lead from the Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. Tourists most often start from the Zaroslyak base or from the village of Lazeshchyna. Each route has its advantages: the first is shorter and easier, the second is more picturesque but requires endurance.

There are also more difficult multi-day treks across the Chornogora Ridge — for those who dream of seeing Hoverla, Petros, and Pip Ivan in one trip. However, experts emphasise that such routes are only suitable for experienced tourists with the proper equipment and training.

Safety first: registration and advice from rescuers

Before heading into the mountains, it is worth registering on the websites of the rescue services of Ivano-Frankivsk or Zakarpattia regions or using the mobile application ‘Rescue in the Mountains’. This can save lives, because in the event of an unforeseen situation, specialists will be able to quickly get in touch.

According to rescuers, only about 10% of tourists register their route before heading into the mountains. This complicates the search in case of emergencies. At the same time, thanks to official registration, hundreds of people who got lost or injured during climbs have been rescued in the last six months. This proves once again that even a few minutes spent on an online application can make a difference.

Important:

– carefully consider your equipment — from comfortable shoes with treads to thermal clothing and a supply of water;

– do not go alone on unfamiliar trails;

– always inform your loved ones of your route and return time.

These simple actions significantly reduce the risks that even experienced travellers face in the mountains.

Every year, the State Emergency Service conducts hundreds of rescue operations — mostly because tourists get lost in the fog, get injured or simply misjudge their strength. The Carpathians are beautiful, but they require discipline.

Climbing to the top is not only a sporting adventure, but also a responsibility for your own life.
