Blackouts are returning to Ukraine: where power cut schedules have already been introduced

After another massive Russian strike on the Chernihiv region, the region's energy system was on the brink of collapse. Damage to critical infrastructure caused emergency power cuts, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without electricity. The authorities were forced to introduce strict power supply schedules to at least partially stabilise the situation.

The situation in the Chernihiv region

According to Chernihivoblenergo, the attack led to a systemic failure that affected more than 300,000 subscribers in several districts at once. Energy companies note that there are not enough resources to provide power to all consumers at the same time, so from 1 October, starting at 8 p.m., the region will be operating on a schedule of hourly power cuts.

The power cut model is as follows: three hours with power — six hours without. The schedule also specifies periods of reconnection, when electricity will be supplied and cut off intermittently. The schedule includes four shifts at once, which means large-scale interruptions for most residents.

What do the regional authorities say?

The head of the Chernihiv City Military Administration, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, said that the city is preparing emergency centres where people will be able to charge their phones and warm up.

School education will be transferred to a remote format until the end of the week, and kindergartens will suspend work for at least one day to synchronise their schedule with the new timetables.

Street lighting will also not work in Chernihiv, and traffic lights will continue to function only where there is a backup power supply. Despite this, the city's electric transport is promised not to be stopped.

Threats to energy and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Attacks on Ukraine's energy sector are once again threatening the safety of critical facilities. The Ministry of Energy reported that the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was left without electricity as a result of the attack. This is a complex that ensures the safety of the destroyed fourth power unit and prevents radiation leaks. After three hours, the supply to the station was stopped.

Experts emphasise that such attacks are dangerous not only because of local blackouts, but also because of the potential risks for the entire country and even the region.

Let us remind you! Ukraine currently spends more on the war than some EU countries allocate to defence for the whole year. Daily expenses amount to several hundred million. Find out how much money is spent on the war and which European countries spend less.

Frequantly
asked questions
What is an hourly power cut schedule (HPCS) and how do I use it?
HPCS is a schedule according to which electricity is supplied to residents' homes in turn. Usually, the schedule looks like several hours of light and several hours without, but the exact ratio depends on the state of the region's power system. You can check the current schedule on your power company's website or on official Telegram channels.
How can I find out when the power will be cut off in my home?
What should I do if the power is cut off outside the schedule?
