The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has approved new rules for the appointment and payment of one-time financial assistance in the event of the death of military personnel. The updates are aimed at providing the families of deceased soldiers with more stable and predictable financial support, taking into account the increase in the country's defence spending.

According to the ministry, the changes came into effect on 1 September 2025. For families whose loss occurred before that date, the payment procedure will remain the same.

What has changed

According to the updated procedure:

▪️ The total amount of one-time financial assistance remains unchanged at UAH 15 million.

▪️ One-fifth (UAH 3 million) will be paid immediately after the necessary documents are processed so that the family can cover immediate expenses.

▪️ The remaining UAH 12 million will be transferred in equal instalments over 80 months. This is equivalent to approximately UAH 150,000 per month.

Thus, the Ministry of Defence is focusing on long-term financial support for the families of deceased military personnel, while retaining the urgent part of the payments for the most pressing needs.

Who is affected by the new rules

The changes apply to all units of the Security and Defence Forces of Ukraine. This means that the new conditions will apply not only to servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but also to other categories of defenders involved in the defence of the country.

Why are the changes needed

The Ministry explained that a uniform payment schedule allows for:

▪️ strengthen the stability of the financial support system;

▪️ ensure the predictability of income for families;

▪️ reduce the burden on the state budget in wartime.

At the same time, families will receive part of the assistance immediately, which will allow them to quickly resolve issues related to organising funerals, paying debts and other vital needs.
