How much money do you need to enter different European countries?

When travelling in Europe, Ukrainians need to consider not only visa rules but also financial requirements: many countries require proof of a certain amount of money for each day of stay. These rules vary from a symbolic few euros to tens or even hundreds per day. Find out what the minimum amounts are in different countries

When travelling to countries in the Schengen area, Ukrainians must take into account not only documents and insurance, but also financial requirements. At the border, you may be asked to confirm that you have sufficient funds for your stay. The amounts vary from country to country: in some places it is only a few euros per day, while in others it is tens or even hundreds. This is reported by Eurotrips.

Minimum amounts for entry into European countries

The rules apply to visa-free travel and concern both cash and funds on a bank card. To avoid problems during the check, it is worth clarifying the current regulations in advance. Below are the approximate requirements for popular destinations:

1. Estonia — about 86 euros per day, one of the highest requirements in the EU.

2. Hungary — only 3 euros per day, the minimum amount among Schengen countries.

3. Germany — approximately 45 euros per day per person.

4. Greece — from €50 per day or at least €300 for a short trip.

5. Spain — approximately €71 per day.

6. Italy — for a single tourist for up to 5 days — €269.6, for groups the amount is less.

7. France — from €32.5 if you have confirmed accommodation, or €120 if you do not.

8. Poland — 300 zlotys for trips of up to three days, or 100 zlotys per day for longer stays.

9. Switzerland — €91 per day, €27 for students.

10. Lithuania, Czech Republic, Finland — on average €30–40 per day.

In some countries (e.g. Austria or Luxembourg), the amount is determined individually and depends on the purpose of the visit.

How money is checked at the border

Border guards or visa officers have the right to request proof of funds. This can be:

▪️ cash;

▪️ a bank statement or ATM receipt;

▪️ a hotel reservation confirmation with the paid portion of the stay.

If you plan to use a bank card, it is better to print out a statement with the current amount in your account in advance. This will help you avoid delays and questions at customs.

Should you only take cash?

Cash is convenient for small expenses, but keeping everything ‘in your pocket’ is dangerous. The best option is a combination: part of the amount in euros or the currency of the destination country, the rest on a card. It is also recommended to have a reserve in foreign currency in case of unforeseen expenses.

We remind you! Incorrect use of bank cards outside Ukraine can lead not only to account blocking, but also to the loss of your own funds. Learn how to use your card safely to avoid trouble and unexpected expenses abroad.
