Ukrainians will soon be able to obtain medicines with electronic prescriptions not only in Ukraine but also in European Union countries. This will be possible thanks to a pilot project to create a European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet). The innovation opens up the prospect of free exchange of medical data between countries and simplifies patients' access to necessary medicines abroad.

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the project is being implemented as part of the POTENTIAL (PilOTs for European Digital Identity Wallet) initiative, in which Ukraine is participating alongside EU countries, despite not yet being a member of the European Union. The initiative brings together 19 European countries and over 160 public and private partners.

How will the European digital wallet work?

The European digital wallet (EUDI Wallet) is intended to become a universal tool for storing identification data in electronic form. Essentially, it is a mobile application that will allow citizens to have their identity, medical records, and prescriptions for medicines on their smartphones.

A key feature is the ability to obtain medicines with an e-prescription in different European Union countries. This is particularly important for Ukrainians who are temporarily living abroad, traveling, or on business trips.

As explained by Deputy Minister of Health for Digital Development Maria Karchevich, the team at the State Enterprise “Electronic Health” is already testing technical solutions for data exchange in collaboration with specialists from the “Dія” app. Thanks to this exchange, pharmacies in EU countries will be able to see Ukrainian e-prescriptions and dispense medicines based on them.

It is important to remember that when abroad, Ukrainians need not only access to medicines but also medical insurance. This allows them to receive qualified assistance in unforeseen situations and avoid large treatment costs. Which countries are participating in the project?

The following countries have joined the cross-border data exchange during the testing phase: Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Finland, Italy, Spain, Poland, Portugal, and Ukraine.

Thus, Ukraine has become the only participating country outside the European Union, which highlights the country's level of integration into European digital and medical processes.

Prospects for the project

The POTENTIAL initiative participants are working to make electronic identification as secure and convenient as possible. It is envisaged that the digital wallet will not only be used for medical data. In the future, it will be possible to store identity cards, driver's licenses, vehicle documents, and even diplomas.

This project is part of a broader digital transformation of Europe and Ukraine. For our country, participation in such initiatives means gradual integration into the EU's single digital space and improving the quality of life for Ukrainians both in Ukraine and abroad.
