In the context of Russia's full-scale invasion, insurance is no longer a formality but a tool for financial protection. When the risks associated with rocket attacks and explosions are real for every city in Ukraine, a logical question arises: does insurance cover rocket strikes? This article will help you understand what exactly is covered by insurance if a missile falls nearby and how to properly arrange such a policy.

Insurance during wartime: how does it work?

Does insurance work under martial law?

Yes, but with important nuances. Most standard insurance policies taken out before 24 February 2022 contain exclusions that explicitly state that risks related to war, hostilities and terrorist acts are not covered. This means that if your home has been damaged by a blast wave or rocket debris, your standard insurance policy will most likely not cover the damage.

What are ‘war risks’ in insurance?

War risks in insurance are a separate type of coverage that protects property (real estate, cars) or human health from damage caused directly by military action. This can include falling rocket debris, shock waves, fires caused by shelling, or even the effects of combat operations in frontline areas.

Fortunately, there are special insurance programmes on the market today that provide this coverage. For example, on the Visit Ukraine platform, you can take out insurance against active and passive war risks, which is valid in the event of shelling, explosion or missile strike, providing real financial protection.

What can insurance cover in the event of shelling or a missile strike?

Properly arranged insurance can help compensate for damage to various types of property and health:

Real estate: Apartment insurance with war risk coverage or home insurance during wartime can cover the cost of repairing damaged windows, doors, roofs and facades, as well as interior decoration, belongings and appliances inside the premises.

Car: If your car is damaged by a blast wave, falling debris or shelling, Mini Hull Insurance with war risks will cover the cost of repairs or part of the cost of the car if it cannot be repaired.

Health: Medical insurance for foreigners with war risk coverage ensures that in the event of injury or trauma caused by shelling, you will receive compensation for treatment, hospitalisation and other medical expenses.

How to get compensation: step-by-step guide

If an insured event occurs, it is important to act quickly and correctly in order to receive compensation for a missile strike.

What documents are required?

2. Official statement to the insurance company about the occurrence of an insured event.

3. Documents from emergency services (State Emergency Service, police) confirming the fact of a missile strike or explosion, and an act of damage assessment.

When and how to contact the insurance company?

Notify your company of the insured event as soon as you are safe. This can be done by calling the number listed on the policy.
